Hatchery Dedication Friday 1» « • _ . Valed»:toiian, Salutatorian Chosen Governor Tom McCall will head an official delegation of state, civic and municipal dig nitaries an Friday, April 18, as he formally dedicates the Ore gon Fish Commission hatchery at Elk River. The dedication culminates an intensive three- year planning and construction program by the commission's engineering, fish culture, and research divisions, in coopera tian ->f Com tion with the Rin-»«.. Bureau < of m ercial Fisheries. The Elk River hatchery, lo cated ten m iles from Port Ctford, is the first to be built in Curry5 county and has enj oyed the en thusiasm and support of its res idents from the point of incep tion. To make the hatchery5 a t tractive as well as functional, great care was exercised to see that the natural beauty of the ____. . ................... site was maintained. All elec trical hookups were laid under- ground a n d special pumping systems carry water to the rear ing ponds to make them unob trusive to natural beauty. In short, Elk River will not only ltmction efficiently, but w i l l maintain its natural beauty5 as well. ' Production from this import - ant installation will provide the salmon stock for the majcr tri butaries of southern O re g o n . Plans < all tor the rearing of ap proximately one mUli.in fish the tirstyear.hrcluded in this figure will be 850,000 fall chinook and 150,000 coho, liberation is planned for the Elk and Chetco systems as w e ll as the Floras Lake area. Hatchery fish will be kept in rearing ponds the same length of tune they would normally spend under natural conditions m the streams, then they will be liberated and return directly to the sea. This will ensure that hatchery fish do not compete w i t h wild fish in the streams and ill allow natural spawning to continue under the most fruit ful circumstances. Couple the hatchery migrations a n d the natural migrations, and the out- look for total southern Oregon fish production assumes exciring proportions. Equipment for the hatchery w i l l feature Burrows rearing ponds. This design keeps the water circulating in the ponds at all times and the fish swim ming, resulting in much strong er fish w ith greater endurance, leaving little opportunity for sick fish to congregate in quiet water. The ponds are self-clean ing and are expected to result in a much higher fish survival rate. Additionally adult h o ld in g ponds ha ve been constructed with a f is h w a y and support buildings housing freezer storage of the "Oregon Pellet, " shop, garage, e l e c t r i c a l control equipment and incubation roam. Thursday, April 17, 1969 A stream bed filtration system will draw water from the river and carry i t to the hatchery ponils providing continuous cir culation essential to healthy hatchery programs. Research an a continuous bas is will also play a part in the Elk River operation. Studies of the early life history of the fall chinook in the area will be undertaken and a biologist will be working in the Elk and Sixes areas, and overall potential of tl» Curry county streams will be under continuous scrutiny at all times. Complete cost of the Elk River installation was $476,- 000 including the hatchery fa cility and three houses for per sonnel and t h e i r families in residence. An additional $7,000 in road improvement was car ried out by Curry county. Sup erintendent of the new Elk Riv er Hatchery is R e e d White, whose leng-time career in fish - .. —■ " ery management is well known throughout Oregcn. He brings the cumulative experience and in depthunderstanding of hatchery o;ieraticn and fish management to this most important commis sion project. The Elk River hatchery will raise to 15 the total number of fish hatcheries under the man agement jurisdiction of the Fish Commission of Cregan. It rep resents a forward step in a pro gressive and growing program of better conservation and man agement of our marine and tri but, u-y resources. Governor Mc Call sums up this feel ing of con cern and protection of Oregon's own when he said, "I have a great weakness for fish hatch eries. " The commission expresses its formal thank you to the Senate and House Fish and Game Com mittees, the Curry County Board of Commissioners u n d e r Ira Tucker's leaderéhip, former leg islator Carl Back, and the mem bers of the Salmon Unlimited whose enthusiasm and support ma de Elk River a real ity. There - fare, it is with justifiable pride that the new Elk River Salmon Hatchery is dedicated to the people of Curry County and the State of Oregon. w jPorf (Orford Mews Voi. 12 No. 3 By-laws W ill Be Considered Port Orford, Curry County, Oregon 97465 Price: Ten Cents ★★★★★★★★ County Budget Meet Slated The annual membership and directors’ meeting of the Curry East-West Highway Associa tion will be held at the Rogue There will be a meeting of River Cafe tonight (Thursday) the Curry County budget com for the purpose of electing new m ittee an Friday,April 25, 1969 officers and directors, and con at 10 a.m .in the court house at sidering amending the by-laws.
