MANY years ago, long before
¡ S r S p i y « the coming of the Indians, there
lived a fair R°dde,s in her h0T e
g 8^
Cl, high up in the mountains at the
B
Q headwaters of the Coquille river.
fe iE C S g . The fame of her beauty and her
kindliness spread far and wide among the gods
and the goddesses and man came seeking her
hand, until she was the envy of the fair and
despair of the brave, for of all her suitors she
took no note.
.. ..
« .
However, tales of her beauty finally reached
even Soleus, the sun god, who came wooing the
fair Maymette and found favor m her eyes. Th
made Oceanus, the wave god, angry, and he
thirsted for revenge. Soon Soleus must return
to his home in the West across the great sea, and
he led his bride with him The lovers. came
down from the high mountains, crossing through
the tall forests until they reached the great sea,
the home of the wave god.
But Maymette was timid and feared to walk
upon the water, which quivered as Oceanus
raged. So Soleus with a sweep of his hand and
a few magic words (for he was a P?werf“‘ .go^ )?
i„,;n a causeway across the sea. They had but
was left behind. Deserted, she sank into the
waters and only her head remained above their
crest, when Soleus, recovering from a blow dealt
by Oceanus, asked the fate of his bride. Glancing
back, Bandonus saw she was lost to his son and
so he changed her body into stone to preserve
it from the wrath of the wave god.
Of the lover’s causeway, none but a small
piece remains, and it shows a great hole in its
side where Oceanus hit it with his fist. The head
of Maymette still faces the home of her lover in
the West; and even to this day when Soleus,
who sadly went back to his job of hauling the
great light through the sky, has looked upon the
image of his lover with especial tenderness,
Oceanus rages and as the south wind blows, you
mav hear the “Boom, Boom, Boom, of his
wrath as he hurls the waves through the Bridge
of the Gods,” determined to scatter the last ves
tige of the causeway among its former parts
along the sandy shore.
