Siomach Worms
Harm Sheep
M o s t authorities on sheep
agree that stomach worms cost
the sheep business more m oney
than any other one item.
Dr.John Landers, Oregon Sfcte
University extension animal
scienti-t, says there are tw o
materials on the market at the
present time that do a very sat
isfactory job in control ling
stomach worms in sheep. They
are purified microfine phenoth
iazine and thibenzole.
The phenothiazine should be
given at the rate of two ounces
per sheep, and two treatments
should be given at 10 to 14 day
intervals, Dr. Landers recomm
ends. Thibenzole may be given
at the rate of one ounce per
mature sheep, and one treatment
is recommended. In either case,
use the recommendation on the
container as specified by the

ed down and there has been a
good frost. With this type of
weather condition, the re growth
or repopulation of stom a c h
worms is much slower, he ex
plained. It is highly desirable
that the treatment be given at
this time of the year, so th e
sheep will not carry a load of
worms through the winter. This
costs additional money to feed
the sheep, and it will eliminate
the parasitism of lambs prior to
the time the spring treatment is

made about April 1.
If thibenzole was used las t
spring, it may be desirable t o
use phenathiazine this fall. This
recommended is made b e -
cause there is a possibility of a
building-up resistance by rh»
stomach worm for a given m a-
terial, Ek. Landers says.
After treating the sheep, Dr.
Landers advises moving them to
clean pastures where there have
been no sheep for 30 days. This
aids in breaking the worm cycle.
