He stated: “ According to the F. B. I. Ten years age, when the F. B. I. began collecting statistics, Oregon ranked 25th. During the last ten years the crim e rate tn Oregon has in creased 151% which fa r exceeds the national Increase of 113%. O r e g o n ’ s crim e rate has In creased at a much faster rate than either California (78%), W a s h in g to n (97%), o r Idaho (47%).” “ Oregon’ s economy Is one of the healthiest In the nation. We have had one of the lowest un employment rates. With the e x c e p tio n of a few isolated cases, our citizens a re w e llo ff. We do not have those wide spread ghetto conditions that exist In some Industrial states and are the traditional breeding grounds for crim e. Yet, Ore gon has one of the highest crim e rates tn the nation. I cannot help but think that we have lacked leadership in the field ci law enforcement. An Attorney General who was w ill ing to use the prestige and pow er of that office could f ill this leadership gap. I believe the people of Oregon have a right to e x p e c t and d e m a n d such leadership from the Attorney General.
