The extent and urgency of the problem and the lethal effect of the dams Is clearly shown In a recent Investigation conduct ed by the WDF in cooperation with the Bureau of Commercial Fisheries on the Columbia Riv er. The survival rate was 20 to 1 in two groups of fish, T o lle f- son said. Of one group passing through four dams, only one fish survived, compared to 20 surviving in a s im ila r group released below the dam. The young Chinook about three to four inches in length, reared at Ringold Pond on the Colum bia, revealed the lethal ef fect of the dams In stark num bers. Onegroupof 90,000 mark ed Chinook was released d ire ct ly from Ringold; another mark ed group of 90,000 was hauled by truck and released below Bonneville Dam. Theyoungsal mon were captured In seines at Puget Island In the lower riv e r by BCF crews and for each one of the salmon recovered that ran the gauntlet of dams and th e ir forebays, there were only 20 recovered from groups re leased below the dam. “ We have known for some tim e that each dam k ills a certain number of young sea ward bound salmon,” T o lle f- son said, “ and much work has been done by our department and BCF to solve the problem. The recent investigation ce r tainly confirms our views of the lethal action of dams and reminds all of us who want to keep salmon running in the Columbia that a solution to this problem must be found.” While solutions to this vital problem are being sought not only on the Columbia River, but on every riv e r that Is af fected by dams In both the states of Washington and Oregon, the poor salmon are really taking a beating, while at the same tim e more hydro-electrlcdam s are being proposed, lncludlng one on the famous Snake River. Each such dam means the k ill ing of more game fish, but in dustry demands dams as the trend is ever westward and the population continues to in crease by leaps arrl bounds, so to speak. Old campsites are converted, almost over night, int', tra ile r courts aid commercial projects of all sorts. Old landmarks disap pear . . . relentlessly, c iv ili zation moves ever onward. AS TO PROGRESS The building of hydro-elec tr ic dams, the conversion of the very larrl that was once the habitat of a ll species of w ild life for countless centur ies, the ravaging of once p rim itive spots, are being gradually eased from the scene as mod ern progress takes over. There’ s something concern ing the name of progress that leaves a b itte r taste in the mouth of this old tim e r; to me the name is symbolic of greed, the desire of the general pub lic and Industry to claim the land . . . the very w ild e r ness . . . fo r their own; to k ill the fish that frequent th e streams, to gradually eliminate our game animals from the picture; to continue to cash in on w ild life by offering It fo r sale to the highest bidders— the wealthy class of sports men, and that goes fo r fishing, too. Each season finds more prop erty posted against trespassing. Commercialism has not only been born, but it flourishes In the matter of selling our fish to the anglers. Gradually, the free entry across lands to fis h ing streams Is being curtailed to a great extent statewide. A local example Is property lo cated near the mouth of Sixes River, known as the "old o r chard hole” . . . a spot which may s till be fished at the cost of a buck apiece to anglers wishing to try their luck; but, it means that no longer can a car be driven to the “ old o r chard,” but anyone paying the fee must walk there. While the distance is not too great, it nevertheless serves to discou rage a lot of fishermen. Down nearer the mouth of the riv e r, boat launching and fish ing cost a buck also. Neither charge can be considered out of line. In fact, they are of a reasonable nature, but It does serve to prove how once free fishing Is now being commer cialized upon, and throughout the entire state where good angling exists at many spots. That's progress for you! Yep, that word leaves a bad taste In this old tim e r’ s mouth, as already stated. We always pos sess the urge to spit after uttering it . . . we usually do. ÎUTH COAST Calm ocean, balmy weathe^ and good salmon fishing has been the story along the south coast, this week. At Gold Beach, boats have been trolling in the bay and out to the bell bouy with gen erally good success for chinook averaging 20-25 pounds. A 43 pounder was brought In on Sun day. The weekend prospects are difficult to predict because the ca tch h asb een varying from thy to day as has the ocean condi - tlons, but the outlook is favor able. A few fall chinook are nosing into the Rogue River giving the sm attering of anglers on th e stream an occasional thril I. O ifted spln-n-glos and freshroe are taking most of the fish. C at ches should continue to improve as the season develops. No new runs of summer steel head have entered the Rogue lately despite the recent rains. However, a number of fish h ave been rolling in the bay durin g low tide and will have to start moving up river sometime.
