Return From Trip
\ l r . and M rs. J. W. McNeese
if E lk River le ft on May 6
’n r a vacation trip of one month
■I returned June 3 after having
tiaveled about five thousand
lies through five states, v is it
ing relatives of both of them
and also friends of many years.
In Boise, Ida., they visited
her nephew, then on to Monte
zuma Creek, Utah, where her
brother, H. C. Hunter, Is super
intendent of E l Paso Natural
Gas Company.
In Colorado the McNeeses
visited the Mesa Verde c liff
dwellings where they saw some
a rtifa cts that are said to be
15,000 years old. Some corn
which had been kept sealed
fo r possibly 750 years looked
as though It would grow If put
in the ground.
They found Durango, Colo.,
to be another spot fille d with
history and from there went
to Lubbock, Tex., where the
sad note of the ir trip was ex
perienced. M r. McNesse’ s s is
ter was in the hospital as a
result of the emotional shock
of losing her son, whose funeral
was the day before they a rrive d ,
and since It was Impossible to
v i s i t with her they went to
Abilene where they visited the
D. E. Burns fam ily who have
visited m Port Orford. When they
returned to Lubbock they found
the sister m uch im proved and
had a wonderful v is it w ith her.
A t Waco, T e x ., they visited hi«
sister, Mrs. Dan Cash, and her
three m arried sons, then on to
R inger to .v is it a niece.
On M em orial Day, 1968, at
10 a.m. P ort O rford Cub Scouts
David and Mike Schroeder, D ar
r e ll and B illy Cobb and C h ris
Wagner went to the cem etery
w it h
representatives of the
Am erican Legion and A u x ilia ry
and, a fte r p r e s e n t i n g the
C olors, placed 42 swags and
flags on the graves of w ar
Veterans.
Hiese Cubs from Pack 98
placed a m em orial wreath at
the base of the flag in mem ory
of the Unknown Soldier and put
special wreaths on the graves
of the two oldest veterans who
are burled in the cemetery.
They were Isaac Johnson of the
94th Infantry In Massachusetts,
who died In 1912, and Leland
White, b ro th er of Gene White,
who was in the F ir s t W orld
War.
In the evening the boys re
turned to the cem etery and
gathered up the flags and are
caring fo r them.
It is the hope of the Legion
and A u x ilia ry that this is the
beginning o f an annual program
fo r M em orial Day and that every
year the Cubs and Scouts w ill
make the placing of wreaths
and f l a g s a pa rt of t h e i r
