centers around the Battle o f
Battle Rock.
What's m ainly needed are
m o re volunteers to play the
Indians. Qualifications are not
much, e ith e r.. . just things like

whoops. . .mediocre proficiency
w ith ow and arrow or spear and
tomahawk. . . and some a b ility
to p ay dead in the event one of
the settlers happens to shoot
straight.

meeting. . . so no meeting, of

There was one problem be
cause of no quorum, tho, .. be
cause itwasthe meeting for the
public hearing on the budget.

a problem because no one show

bers were talking Monday noon
about what to do for a parade
marshall and the name of Sen,
Wayne Morse came up because
he was instrumental in getting
funds for the local je tty project.
Of course EVERYBODY t h o t
what a GREAT thing if the sen
ator could attend.. . seeing as
how NOBODY can remember
him ever being here before.
After getting all enthused
w ith the idea I agreed to con
ta ct m y good friend Charlie
Brooks at Morse's Portland office
and see if the senator CCULD
make it, Charlie told me that
Morse was in Washington but
that he had to come to Cregon
the last of June so he would see
i f the senator m ight be able to
s ta y over through the Fourth,
then c a ll me back Tuesday a f
ternoon.
W ith high hopes 1 started the
wheels rolling for a reception
for the enator w ith county and
c ity o ffic ia ls .. . to tour the har
bor, treatment plant, fish hatch
ery, e tc .. . then waited for the
phone to ring.
It did. I wish it h a d n 't He
can't come. (But I tried. )

those clubs, groups, individuals,
etc., who are planning to enter,
sign up as soon as possible so he
can start making up the forma
tion plans. An entry form w ill

Treatment p l a n t operator
Charlie Haines tells me he is
having some problems at the
plant w ith a small plastic de
vice that is being dumped daily
into the sewer system. The de
vice is about three inches long,
hollow, w ith one end smaller
and ribbed. Charlie says these
gadgets are fouling up the oper
ation a n d he would be most
happy if whoever is depositing
them would cease. He doesn't
know what the item is .. . nor
does anybody else he has shown
them to . . . s o he is a little
stymied. Be low is a photo of one.

tion Board of Directors to the
office of second vice president
in the organization.
Mr. Crowhurst, of Gold Beach,
was first elected to the Board of
Directors by the membership
and then appointed to the sec
ond v ic e presidency by the
Board.
The Oregon Radiological De
fense Officer's Association was
originated and incorporated as
a nonprofit professional organ
ization in the State of Oregon.
Since th e n , other states have
now started forming like pat
terned groups on a national or
ganization basis. Mr. Crowhurst
holds a charter membership in
the ORDOA organization and
has b e e n instrumental in its
early growth, contributions and
success.

To The Editor:
Election day has come and
gone. I hope you w ill perm it
me to use your communication
column to express my very deep
and heartfelt appreciation fo r
all of the thousands of people
all over the state who gave
so unselfishly of their time
and resources to help in my
campaign fo r the United States
Senate.
I have asked myself often why
so many do so much when their
names never appear in the head
lines and they must often feel
that th e ir efforts go unrecog
nized.
I think the answer must be
the same as the answer to the
question as to why candidates
run.
It is simply that they
are dedicated to their country
and to the cause of good rep
resentative government.
If this experiment In demo
cracy is to work each of us
must do what we can, whether
it be running fo r office, work
ing fo r a political party of our
choice, o r simply registering
and voting.
Each individual
contribution goes to make up
the strongest and best country
on earth of which each of us is
so proud. It is this multiple,
manifold effort that so over
shadows the few who condemn
and tear down that government
which all of us hope w ill u nti-
mately bring freedom and peace
In this world.
I want this humble thanks
of mine to extend as well to
those who worked fo r my op
ponent. While 1 disagreed with
their judgment as vigorously
and honorably as I could, their
contribution to this competitive
election process is a part of
the overall great picture.
I pledge, once again, my sup
port to the choice of the majority

A fund drive has been started
to put up the framework fo r

Friends of the late E. R.
Jackman are a t t e m p t in g to
raise $150,000 to establish the
E. R. Jackman Institute forAg-<
rtcultural R e s o u rc e s In his
memory. Eventually they hope
to build an endowment of at
least $1 m illion to perpetuate
the institute.
Jackman, who died last year
at the age of 73, was a county
agent and OSU extension farm
crops specialist at OSU until
his retirement In 1959. He
was credited with pioneering
programs whiehbrought Impro
ved varieties to Oregon wheat
and grass seed growers, new
production techniques to potato
growers, and better range man
agement practices to cattle and
sheep ranchers.
Widely known as an author
and l e c t u r e r , Jackman co
authored such books as “ Gold
and Cattle Country,” “ The Ore
gon Desert,” and “ BlazingFor
est T ra ils .”
In a tribute to Jackman, Gene
Lear, director of the OSU Co
operative Extension Service ,
said, “ His Infectious person
ality, his intimate knowledge
of every part of Oregon, his
genuine interest in all people
and things—in addition to his
great competency—made him
welcome everywhere.”

Croasmun, IRS Regional Com
missioner fo r the Western Re
gion, said today.
The recen* decision by the
U. S. Supreme Court in the
Haynes firearm s case has been
misinterpreted by some fir e
arms dealers and others, as
relieving them of the require
ments Imposed by the National
Firearm s Act.
In the Haynes case, theCourt
held that the constitutional p riv
ilege against self-incrim ination
could be invoked against c rim i
nal charges brought under the
National Firearm s A c t,(o rfa ll
ing to register a firearm or
p o s s e s s in g an unregistered
fire a rm .
The Supreme Court did not,
in its dicision, hold the National
Firearm s Act or any o f its
provisions to be unconstitu
tional, M r. Croasmun pointed
out. The underlying objective
of the Act is to prevent c rim i
nals from obtaining gangster-
type weapons such as machine
guns and sawed-off shotguns.

There were 55 tra ffic deaths
reported to the Oregon Depart
ment of Motor Vehicles during
May. It was the highest death
to ll reported so fa r this year.
The previous month, A p ril,
recorded 53 deaths.
The May figure, which Is
subtect to revision if persons

a later date, b r o u g h t the
state’ s year-to-date death to ll
to 236, 22 fewer deaths than
fo r the same period In 1967.
There were nine m u l t i p le
d e a th accidents during the
month, with two of these each
claiming four lives.

persons killed during the last
two day s ot the month as part
of the Memorial Day holiday
to ll.
The holiday period, in
cluding the firs t two days In
June, resulted In 13 Oregon
tra ffic deaths.
Fatalities are reported Im
mediately by teletype to the
department, with form al police
reports submitted at a later
date.

cluded In the discussion were
m ilk and m ilk products, pro
cessing of both m ilk products
and foods, egg inspections and
inspection of egg meat plants
and package weighing.
Summer Workshop
SOUTH COAST ANGLING
Fair spring chinook and trout
fishing and excellent clam m ing
and bottom fishing are being en
joyed along the South Coast this
week.
The Rogue River continues to
give up a few nice chinook to
the smattering of boat anglers
s till working the river. This late
season effort is paying o ff as
many of the fish are in the 20-
30 pound class.
Spring chinook counts over
Gold Ray Dam totaled 6, 1S3
tlrough May 31. This is about
2,000 fish below the 10-year
average but is w e ll above last
year's count w hich numbered
4, 764 by this date.
A few boats venturing over
the bars at G o ld Beach and
Brookings in quest of salmon are
loading up w ith bottom fish in
stead. D rifting near the reefs
working a jig or herring has been
extrem ely productive for large
lingcod and red snapper.
Minus tides continue through
Sunday for clammers. The best
tides occurred earlier in the
week but ambitious d ig g e r s
should be able to find enough
for a mess.
Pelicans nest in colonies,
usually on an off-shore island.
