Chamber Will Honor Drivers Council Business Light; Lab Water Line Passes The city council took action Tuesday night to permit the in stallation of a wtter line to the OSU Marine Research Lab at the former Coast Guard station. The action involved a motion to change a c i t y ordinance, which passed unanimous. Public works commissioner Jim Peter son said the line would cost a- bout $8, 0C0 for material and should amortize itself in five or six years. Peterson also asked that water rates for commercial users be r e d u c e d , and hook-up fees Curry Woman In Stale Position Last week Berniece Hewitt of Brookings was elected S t a t e vice-president of the Oregon Extension Homemakers Council in Corvallis. At the end of the three-day meeting which was attended by Miriam Christensen, Kathryn Foster, Marie Oak, Mir iam Rasch, Bemeice Hewitt and Curry County Extension Agent Jane Shearer, 35 Oegon county representatives cast their e lec toral votes. This is the first time anyone from Curry county has held an office in the State Extension Council. Over 5,000 Oegon ladies from 36 counties belong to the County Extension Pro gram. Over 800 ladies we re in attendance at the State Coun cil meeting. Mrs.Hewitt will hold the office of vice-president for three years. Her many duties include hold ing the chairmanship of a state committee, officiating as pres ident in the president's absence, and visiting all 36 Oegon coun ties during her term in office. changed. The council voted to raise the hook-up fee from $65 to $100, for up to one-inch lines, because meter costs had gone up. A new commercial rate schedule will be presented at the next meeting. The commissioner suggested that annexation of the property on Coast Guard hill be consid ered so the city could provide water to residences in that area and it was agreed to pursue the matter. Police commissioner Harry Price was given permission to advertise for bids on a new po lice car. A request for a building per m it for a $65, 000 motel was read from Agnes Leutwyler but it was decided to table it because plans were not includ ed. License and building com missioner Adolph Windmaiser will look into the r e q u e s t. Windmaiser added th a t Mrs. Leutwyler had also requested that the grade of 7th S t., be tween Jefferson and Deady, be lowered because of the motel. . . a request she had made several times before. Peterson said he had checked with the three other property owners adjacent to the street and they wanted it left as is. The council approved a re quest by sanitation commis sioner Red McWilliams to pur chase left-over sewer pipe and fittings from Cregon Construc tion Co. at a cost of $1, 500. It was decided to refer a request from Val Townley asking the city to remove a pumping sta tion near his property and place it underground to former city attorney Lynn McNutt. Townley said it was an eye-sore and de valued his property. Mayor Jim Wilson announced that the State Sanitary Authority had approved a request for ad ditional funds In the amount of $15, 000 for necessary work on the sewer plant lagoons.
