THIS VIEW of the Elk Riv er salmon hatchery s i t e shows nearly full area now under construction. Sched uled to open in October, the hatchery will have an estimated annual rearing potential of one million yearling and two million short-term fish,mainly fall Chinook and Coho salmon, all earmarked for release into southern Oregon coast al streams. Facilities will include two concrete block and wood frame buildings, 14 concrete rearing ponds and adult fish holding fa cility, fishways and a water supply system, plus three residences for employees. New East-West Road Outlined A direct inland route from Gold Beach to Grants Pass was announced last Friday night by Robert Tokarczyk, U, S. Forest Service recreational land staff office. Tokarczyk spoke at the annual meeting of the Curry East-WestHighway Association. To be built by the forest ser vice, the highway will follow the south bank of the Rogue River toAgness and continue in- 1 a n d via Shasta Costa Creek, Soldier Camp and Galice Creek roads. F ro m Galice the route will traverse thejosephine coun ty road to Interstate 5 about five miles north of Grants Pass.Jos- ephine county h a s plans for widening and straightening its portion of the route. Designed for multipurpose use of log hauling and recrea tion, the present road will be widened and paved. Some con struction contracts are being let now, the speaker announced. Approaches to the Illinois River bridge were repaired temporar ily by logging companies and permanent approaches will be contracted for construction this summer during low-water per iod. Target date for completion of paving from Lobster Creek to the Rogue River bridge near Shasta Costa Creek is 1970. Fu ture construction plans include a one-way logging road with turnouts from this point to Sol dier Camp by August, but no pro gram for further improvement has been scheduled at this time. The portion from Soldier Camp to Galice is due to be rebuilt and repaired within two or three years, he said. Jim Izett, highway committee chairman,appointed a commit tee to make plans for a picnic meeting with Curryjacksan and Josephine county commissioners and J a c k s o n and Josephine chambers of commerce. The meeting is planned to explore cooperative efforts to promote more rapid development of the inland route. Izettwas re-elected chairman o f the East-West committee.
