P roposed N e w A n g lin g R u les At a packed house public meeting In Portland recently, the Oregon Game Commission listened to proposed angling r e g u la tio n changes f r o m sportsmen and its own staff, and then set tentative rules fo r the 1968 fishing season ba­ sed on these recommendations. The Commission tightened the rules In some areas and relaxed them In others, but In the m ain, anglers w ill have seasons, bag lim its , and other fishing regulations s im ila r to last ye a r. The general trout season w ill open A p ril 20 and extend through O ct. 30 In a ll waters except stream s In zones 1, 3 and 4. M in o r date changes w ere made In the seasons fo r zones 3 and 4 , the Umpqua and Rogue d rain ­ ages, with seasons correspond­ ing generally to last ye a r. The high lakes and coastal stream s would open May 25 and run through Oct. 31. F ly fisherm en received con­ sideration from the Com m is­ sion with several new areas included In the fly fishing only w aters. These Included a por­ tion of the Rogue and W illia m ­ son rivo rs and modification of the fly rules on the Umpqua and M etolius. Lifted was the fly fishing regulation f r o m Charlton Lake In the high Cas­ cades. On the Rogue R iver, fly fish­ ing only would be allowed from Gold Ray Dam upstream to Laurelhurst B r id g e fro m Aug. 15 through Oct. 15. The fly fishing waters on the W il­ liamson R iv e r would be from the low er boundary of C o llie r State Park downstream to U. S. Highway 97 bridge. On the M e­ tolius, anglers would fish on a catch-and-release basis, with barbless hooks, from the Camp Sherman Bridge upstream to the Lake C reek deadline. Fly anglers on the North Umpqua w ere restricted to flie s with no added weight o r attachments with the exception of a floating device. In an effo rt to crop more Jack salmon, the Commission included the Columbia R iv e r to the lis t of stream s In which a special Jack salmon bag lim it applies and extended the season In these w aters one month through Dec. 31. Portions of the Rogue and Umpqua riv e rs w ere also opened up to the taking o f Jack salmon the year around. Final regulations fo r the 1968 season w ill be set by the Commission at a public hearing Thursday, Novem ber 16.
