The sooner you do It the better the service. Walt too long and you may have to wait your turn. "The kind of tune-up that w ill keep you going when the weather gets co ld ," Eddy emphasized, "Includes thefuel and electrical systems, timing, battery and plugs, It necessary. Dependable antl-freeze fo r the low temper atures that occur In some areas of Oregon Is absolutely neces sa ry." "A check of your safety equipment should Include lights, windshield wipers andwashers, d e f r o s t e r , exhaust, brakes, tire s and tire chains." But you can’t leave it all to someone else, he said. Each motorist should take It upon him self to line-up emergency equipment in the trunk of his car in case the worst happens. Driving Hints For Winter It Is always interesting to see how different motorists approach winter. Some flit Into winter like summer butterflies while others get ready as care fully as squirrels gather nuts, according to Howard L. Eddy, executive secretary of the Ore gon T raffic Safety Commission. The "casual” motorists don’t seem to remember that winter driving calls for winterized cars and winterized driving. They put off winterizing until they have trouble. The responsible motorists think of the bad weather that’ s sure to come and they prepare to meet it. These people suffer the least winter hardships themselves and cause the least obstruction to other drive rs, Eddy said. The firs t good pre-w inter move is to put your car in the hands of a competent mechanic r. shovel, a bucket of sand, a tow chain, booster cables, tire chains and emergency flares and lights. You should have an les scraper and even a can of spray defroster andoneof extra washer antl-freeze are also helpful to have In your "trouble k it.’ ’ "W inter has been called the ’S’ season," Eddy explained. "The 'S’ stands fo r special driving problems—snow, sleet, skids and stuck. I may add that I can add another—windshields 'streaked’ by dead wiper blades. " I t needn’ t be that way, though, if you can have an ‘S’ o r two in your bag of winter tric k s —sense and skill. The time to start coping with the special driving problems win ter brings is now,” he added.
