EVEN the pelicans and seagulls had their problems in Monday's windstorm. As these two
long-billed birds were trying to keep their footing just down the hill from the Neptune
Motel, a strong gust of wind blew the seagull up over hill rim at right and dumped it
with a body-bouncing whack between pelicans.

HEAR BIOLOGIST
by Terrence Sweeney
Phil Betzold, an expert diver
and a marine biologist enter
tained Pacific h ig h students
Sept. 29, in the school gymnas
ium. This was the first of five
National School Assemblies to
be presented.
Mr. Betzold told with enthus
iasm many of the salty, interest
ing, and thrilling experiences
he had with the sea creatures.
He had collected some of the
predators and the beauties of
the sea creatures and presented
them in his illustrated lecture.
According toMr.Bettold, "Life
underwater is often hard to im
agine, " and he feels one actu
ally has to see it to believe the
community life that exists in
the seas. His lecture and pre
served creatures made under
water life very real to the aud
ience.
Mr. Betzold was bom in Min
nesota but moved to Florida dur
ing his youth. His father was a
well known diver in the West
Indies. With the aid of his father,
friends, and natives, he learned
hardhat, scuba, and skin diving.
Mr.Bettold has tra veled through-
outthe world gaining first hand
k n o w le d g e of m a rin e -life
through study and personal ex
perience.
Highlights of the lecture were
the showing of a large octopus
a n d specimens of barracuda.
Wolffish, sharks, moray e e ls ,
shells, coral, sponge, and diving
gear were also exhibited.

)UTH COAST
The typical south coast fish
erman,lastweek,could be found
huddled under a mound of rain
gear somewhere along the Rog
ue River and enjoying fairly
g o o d success for 18-24 inch
summer steelhead or an occa
sional Chinook.
The rain started the fish mov
ing upriver and catches were
pretty goodFriday and Saturday.
By Monday, however, the river
was completely out of shape
and fishing was at a standstill.
Weekend prospects depend on
the weather and how fast the
river gets back into shape but
there should be fish available.
All other south coast streams
are open and the high water un
doubtedly will attract fall Chin
ook into Elk, Sixes, Pistol and
Chetco R iv e r s . Wobblers or
cluster eggs should begin to pro
duce fish as soon as water con
ditions permit.
