A First Time F or Everything JV OUT The postponement of both the dove and pigeon season that oc curred in Oregon marked the first closure of such bird sea sons—due toaflrehazard--that has evern happened here. Well, as the saying goes . . . there’s always the first time for every thing. And, darned tf it didn’t happen! On two different occasions during the past several years this writer recalls that, due to the dryness of the woods, it was necessary for the pigeon hunter to obtain a permit of entry from the Forest Service in order to gun for the band- tails. Incidentally, despite the dryness of the woods at that time, no fires resulted from the granting of permission to hunters during the entire open season on the birds. The great majority of hunters are lire conscious, and are not just about ready to set the woods afire. But due to the carelessness of a very small minority of such so- called sportsmen, during past deer seasons, the g r e a t ma jority of pigeon hunters must pay the penalty for the acts committed by just a few care less individuals. We were fully In accord with the closure of the woods, but nevertheless, we cannot help but grouse concerning the fact that It would not have occurred If just a small number of nin compoops"-calling themselves sportsmen—had acted as such, and not carelessly started for est fires during various deer seasons. It’s too bad that real sportsmen must suffer the con sequences due to the acts com mitted by others. A real sportsman protects both the came he hunts and the forests which serve to pro tect animals and birds. This scribe is In favor of declaring an open season on careless hunters In general. This would include those guilty of setting forest fires, shooting others through carelessnass in the handling of firearms, and In "potting” a fellow hunter by mistaking him for a game ani mal. With all such persons eliminated from the picture, this would prove to be a better land In which to hunt. BEST OUTDOOR MAGAZINE '66 SINGER Will zig-zag—make buttonholes—blind hem — sew on buttons, etc. Being a member of the Out door W riters’ Association of America, this scribe receives complimentary subscriptions from the publishers of most all leading magazines in the out door field. Each and every one of them provides interesting reading to a hunter and fish erman. However, if we were called upon to state our pref erence as to the one of our first choice in the entire field of publications, we would pick NEBRASKAland, the magazine that is published by the Ne braska Game and Parks Com mission. In my opinion, It Is the best of Its kind In the field In the art of picture reproduction. The pictures of outdoor scenes that It contains are really of a fab ulous nature. Those natureplc- tures are truly masterpieces of photography and of a breath taking character. That goes for the drawings likewise that fre quently appear within the pages. The reproductions are of a quality that would, If framed and hung in a den, provide a setting of unusual attractive ness. In addition to the fine Il lustrations, the magazine is chockful of hunting and fishing PARTICLE BOARD AT stories about Nebraska and of old frontier days.
