phone conversation I had with
Schaning.
County Commissioners say
mere meetings coming up must
be m o r e "study", "research",
"surveys", and "evaluations".
May I respectfully submit:
Curry County, 100 miles long,
has m o re natural clean, with
the exception of Rogue River,
salmon bearing streams then any
Pacific Coastal County. R. D,
Hume, around the turn of the
century raised millions of sal
mon in the Rogue—this without
modem methods. We have seen
salmon in the old cannery three
feet deep on the floor, the seines
had to be partially emptied
before they could be hauled
ashore. Does anyone need any
more graphic proof of our vast
fish rearing potential?
Campbell says "Curry fish
will benefit other counties and
states", would it not be too bad
if he, you and I did something
for our neighbors? It is most ap
parent that Campbell does not
salmon off our coast in recent
weeks, are migrants from Cal
ifornia, the Columbia R iv e r
drainage and Washington State
—mostly hatchery raised—with
virtually n o n e native to our
County.
More Campbell quotes, and
with the full sanction of Wilson
—"Curry County is not subscrib
ing funds and pledges to build
and operate a hatchery". Lets
look at the record—This fund
raising by myself,with their full
app 'oval.
They have made one abrupt
and complete about face from
the original plan. Between 30
and 35 thousand dollars worth
of fish egg incubator trays, pur
chased as surplus from Wash
ington State, at a small fraction
of their value, are standing in
the Brookings County Shop. My
intention was and will always
be, to use th e m in a County
owned and operated hatchery.
Questions are definitely in or
der as to what use others may
l , , wo for th e m Perhans convert
them into filing cabinets to store
more useless "study", and "up
dated survey" propaganda? We
don't know.
Despite the attempted sabo
taging of your efforts to upgrade
and promote the fishing indus
try, which will soon be our num
ber o n e source of economy,
pledges and contributions con
tinue to come in. Keep them
coming. Address all commun
ications to—Heck Timeus, Cur

The Port Orford, Gold Beach

Hatchery Committee, and will
soon relieve the County Board
of Commissioners, with the ex
ception of myself, I hope—of

j e c t Looks like a step in the
right direction, if we are to
achieve our goal.
Concluding—I say—we, the
people of Curry County, w i l l
soon build, maintain and oper
ate our own Salmon Hatchery.
Furthermore m a n y facets of
County business are equally as
"fishy" as this subject. But I
suppose t h a t conditions have
b e e n ever thus. I know that I
cannot hope to change them.
However, I can, and I will con
tinue to express my dislike and
disgust for any actions that are
lacking in dignity, self-respect,
honor, fortitude and integrity.
The reason Commissioner
Timeus was not invited to the
meeting between the Fish Com
mission and the other two Curry
County Commissioners was be
cause in past meetings Mr.Tim
eus has shown an inability to
conduct himself as a gentleman,
and usually created a name
calling fiasco. The purpose of
t h i s meeting was to talk over
Curry County's fish problems to
find out what the Oegon State
Fish Commission's plans were
for Curry County and how they
planned to approach the prob
lems. We did not feel an order
ly and informative m e e t i n g
could be held with Mr. Timeus
present. Mr. Archie McVay was
invited to go along. This was
not an official meeting between
the Fish Commission and the
Curry County Board of Com
missioners, but just a discussion
between Mr. Wilson, Mr. Camp

mission. We were assured by the
Fish Commission that they are
