Publish: Augiet 10,17, 24,1967 ' HARD TO BRING DOWN In spite of Its small size (only s l i g h t l y larger than a robin), the band-tall Is a mighty hard bird to bring down with a charge of bird shot. In addition to their flesh being far from a tender nature, they are exceptionally heavily fea thered which serves to afford them added protection w hen struck by the pellets of various sizes that are used by the small army ofhunters that relentless ly pursue them throughout the entire 30-day season. They are very loosely feath ered and are easy to pluck. It is not at all an unusual oc currence to witness a flying bird struck by a charge of shot that knocks out a fistful of feathers without bringing the bird to earth. At times, after have been struck by a death dealing charge of pellets, they will continue In flight for a considerable distance before plunging earthward. Their dur ability is truly one of a re markable nature. In fact, it is really amazing when compared to that of other species of game birds that out rival them many times in both size and weight but are knocked dead from the skies by the same type of load that falls to halt the tough little band-tall In flight. TOUGH IN TWO WAYS Pigeons are tough In two dif ferent ways. They are hard to kill . . . and they are also hard to cook tender. That Is, with the possible exception of very young birds. The older birds require from two or three solid hours of steady boiling before they’re tender; just forget about frying them. Baking them also con sumes a lot of time. The best method In bringing them to a qulcRer tender stage Is cooking them In the pressure cooker. Prepared for the table In any other manner is bound to test the patience of even the best dls- posltloned housewife. Well, whether you cook ’em yourselves or give ’em away, here’s good luck to all you pigeon hunters, come Sept. 1. Bidders m ust prequalify w ith Owner ten (1G) days prior to bid opening.Pie-qualification forms m ay be obtained from A rchi te ct, and should be subm itted to Owner via A rchitect. If prequal ification form is on file with arch itect and is not over six months old, refiling is not n ec essary unless there has been a substantial change in contrac tor's status. No bid will be considered unless fully com pleted in the m anner provided in the "In structions to Bidders" upon the bid form provided by the Arch itects and accom panied by a bid bond executed in favor of the City of Port Ctford, Oregon, in an am ount not less than 5 per cen t of the total am ount of the bid. Bid bond to be forfe ited as a fixed and liquidated dam age should the bidder neglect or refuse to enter into a con tract and provide suitable bond for the faithful performance of the work in the event the con trac t is awarded to him. Funds for the im provem ent are av a il able and m onthly progress pay m ents will be m ade. The City of Port Crford, O e gon, reserves the right to reject any or all bids and to waive all inform alities. No bidder m ay withdraw or modify his bid af ter the hour set for the opening therefor until after the lapse of thirty days from the bid opening. MUTH COAST A n &W* The large schools of silvers that have been working off the south coast the past few weeks have moved on and as a result, fishing has slowed a b it How ever, fair and occasionally good catches of large Chinook are being brought in at Gold Beach and Brookings providing plenty of incentive for the mob of anglers in the area. The Chinook are averaging better than 20 pounds apiece and hooking one of these ¡link ers helps m ake up for the lack of the sm aller silvers. Chinook fishing in Rogue River bay has been spotty but could erupt any tim e. The bay is full of rolling and jum ping salmon giving trollers fits trying to get them to strike. Could be a good bet for the weekend. Rogue River summer ste el head are thick in the bay and in tidew ater up to Elephant Rock. Boats and shorecasters fishing around the rock have come in with some very nice catches.Best success has been on worms, eggs, small spin-n-glos and wobblers early in the morn ing or in the evening. These fish should start up river any day now so the w eek end prospects look very good.
