A, E.Haight, Paster ally It blares forth from some broadcasting station— even to day. The song— a silly one at that—concerns a preacher that went 'a huntin’ upon a Suncay morning, met up with a b esr, and, in tuna, was brought to bay by bruin. The phonograph records of the song »ere usually worn to a fra zzle In m is t house holds— especially those wheie youngsters were permirted to crank-up the old phonograph, o r what have you? The !dds went fo r that old song In a big way. PREACHER AND DEER Last fa ll, a new record was made. It also concerns a p re acher. However, the new record is not a musical one. It possib ly could be converted Into song by a clever composer, but at the present w riting, It consists of a record of a fa r different nature. It Is an outstanding rec ord of achievement accomplish ed by a certain individual— a m inister of the Gospel. It is a record that hac been recorded In w ritin g —one that w ill go down In history in the Winchest e r Company records. Though In future years it may eventually be topped, tt w ill nevertheless be recorded history fo r a ll tim e in the field of big game trophy hunting. Thereby hangs a tale. Here It Is: Rev. Arnold Dalke of Azalea, O re ., an ardent hunter, hunted fo r days during the past deer season without s u c c e s s . He hunted over a wide scope of country In the area of his home. And, then it happened! A huge buck was spotted— also potted— the gunning preacher, right m front of his house and at a distance of only 150 fe e t Why, that sort of luck is enough to te m p t even a hard-boiled sportsman to study fo r the min istry! It could w ell be taken as a shining example of one who actually lives right, as we know the Rev. Dalke does. But all Joking aside, this w rite r wishes to extend hearty congratulations to that good friend of o u r; «ho won a brand new gold-plated Centennial Model of the 30-30 Winchester for bringing in the largest r a k of b la ck -ta ll deer antlers of the season. The run- ner-up was one-eighth Inch less. Pretty close shave for the preacher, eh? ; FISHERM AN, TOO Rev. Dalke Is not only ao avtd big game hunter, but he also Is quite a disciple of rod and re e l. During the course of a b rief visit paid my home b j him awhile back, we framed up a fishing Junket together during the early spring. Fishermen have a brighter looking weekend c o m i n g up than for the past few months. If winds cooperate and the ocean is fishable, good success is ex pected. Offshore salmon fishing out of Brook mgs has been ranging from f a i r to excellen t with most of the boats getting out retumfitg with fish. The catch has been mostly large silvers, out fair number» of chinook and a few pinks are also being taken. Gold Beach offers good off shore salmon fishing plus fak jack salmon fishtog to the bay. Casting from the north jetty has been productive on jacks. The lower Rogue is begtontog to provide fair catches of seay- run cutthroats.. Fly fishtog is a good bet on these fish. Lots of salmon are being re po r t e d off Pert Oford, but launching facilities are lim ited for sm all sport boats. Elk and Sixes Rivers both of fer good sea-run cutthroat fish ing now. The fisl. are just m o .- tog into tidewater now, so fish ing is low on the streams. Salmon Derby Is Fair Event It's tim e to oil up your U l ~ tog gear and aim for one artBe big trophies in the first annual Curry County Fair Salmon Def- by which opens July 23. Fair manager Bill Crook sy d today,"We expectsom e top*8®- tries in all divisions as the or iginal myrtlewood trophies w ill give the sportsman a prize he can display with pride.
