Good Method For Small Streams When Oregon’ s estimatevi 400,000 fishermen take to the state’ s streams and lakes fo r the opening of ftshlng season, most of them w ill shy away from the sm a lle r trib u ta rie s of the la rg e r stream s. Yet these small streams o f ten provide excellent trout fish ing during the fir s t few weeks of the open trout season, ac cording to Jay 1'. Long, pro fessor of fisheries and w ild life at Oregon State U niversity. Because these sm all streams are less accessible, more bushy, and hanter to fish than the la rg e r streams and lakes, they often receive light angling pressure, I ong noted. lie explained that early In the season most of the sm all trib u ta rie s hold good popula tions of native coastal cut throat tro u t. A fte r the spawn ing season ts over ami the water level drops, these fish «111 move back s Into the la rg e r stream s. A good way to fish the stream s, I ong suggested, ts to use a long fly rod ami mono filam ent line. About -to to 50 feet of 20 o r 25-pound mono filam ent lin e Is attached to the end of the fly line. l ong recommends that the lin e he tapered at the end to about a three o r four-pound tipper.
