It has served to affect the fishing tackle Industry to the extent of virtu ally putting not only Individual craftsmen complet ely out of business, but has also succeeded In forcing the closure of the doors to both large and small business con cerns that dealt almost ex clusively In fishing tackle. Two such establishments, w h ic h were among the largest of th eir kind In the state, closed up shop several years ago In Eu gene as a result of the mass production of fishing tackle. F o r b o th the individual craftsman o r a large percent age of business concerns op erating on an independent ba sis, it was then, as It is today, to either “ fight ’em or Join 'em ” in mass production. Con sequently, many small business concerns folded up, and the Individual makers of various kinds of tackle started to grad ually fade from the picture. As a direct result of this, old trade names that were once so fa m ilia r to thousands of ang le rs remain but a memory today. The individual makers of c e r tain kinds of reels, various types of lu res , and that great craftsman that produced the split bamboo fly rod have about become erased from the In dustrial scene because of mass production of such tackle. RESULT OF PROGRESS It has all come about due tc modern progress. I detest that word! F o r while progress Is responsible for better living conditions In g en era l--b e tte r constructed highways across the country and better business conditions; at the same tim e, it Is also responsible for the ravaging of natural beauty spots, the erasing of old land m arks, the Invasion of w ild e r ness retreats that once were accessible only to the footman and pack horse, but have been c o n v e r t e d from wilderness tra ils to roads In order to give access to hordes of persons bent upon pleasurable pursuits. They, In turn, succeed in despoiling the beauty of those once p rim itiv e spots by lit t e r ing up the surroundings with empty beer bottles and cans, starting forest fire s , spot lighting deer, and raising heck In general. Perhaps 90*c of the present d rive rs of cars and motor bikes that now frequent once old wilderness retreats— which have been converted Into public parks and recreational a re a s -- would be absent today from such surroundings were they forced to hike Into such spots instead of motoring to them. AS TO SOLITUDE City folks, and this Includes the general run of tourists— probably have never known the solitude that once existed, and could be enjoyed In the very spots that, today, afford them access to such places via gas- propelled vehicles. They have no conception of the meaning of solitude, the natural beauty and the general setting of nature that existed p rio r to the Invasion of the masses Into such sacred spots that were treasured within the hearts of those older persons, and to a man that would hike long m iles without complaint in order to enjoy that solitude. Such p rim itive surroundings that once existed enabled one to really appreciate the great C reator and His work as rep- A DAYM AN SP E A K S ... Pacific Loses Diamond Pair A" resented by the beauty of the surroundings . . . not yet de spoiled by the hand of man. F o r solitude encountered In such surroundings serves to soothe one’ s soul, to bring to him thoughts that are foreign to his dally existence in those cities that lie bey ond the bor d er of the wilderness. The high breeze sighing through the tops of the tall trees is a pleasant sound to the ear of those seeking soli tude fa r from the busy life of the cities. The song of birds, the sound of a w aterfall, the m urm ur of a sm all stream chanting Its way with splashing laughter through Its course down a rockbound canyon are music to the ears of those lone p ilg rim s of the w ilder ness— those who seek to fare forth In quiet surroundings, fa r from civilization to e n jo y the offerings extended them by the Red Gods of the F orest. Really, solitude once found In such spots so sacred In the heart of a true woodsman and a lover of nature were be yond, then, and even today, the conception of the outdoors- man of today. They still re main a thing apart and regard ed in reference by the nomads of the wilderness of yester day. Salmon anglers enjoyed the best fishing of the season so far, on Friday and Saturday as both bank and boat fishermen con- sistantlyhooked fish throughout the lower river.Catches dropped sharply on Sunday far most of the day but a fresh run h it the Elephant Rock area in the ev ening providing fast and furious action for a few hours. The prospects for the com ing weekend look good w ith the Rogue in e x ce llen t condition and the p e a k run expected w ith in the next w eek or two. Trout anglers on Floras and Garrison Lakes can s till expect fa irly g o o d catches of both planted and native cutthroat. Best success has been by anglers tro llin g or s t i l l fishing from boats. Powers Takes Track Meet by Roger H ill W ill the A - 2 schools ever find the answer to Powers' super iority In athletics? Sm ith got two hits for three times at bat but d id n 't receive much help f r o m his fellow team m ates which put the Co q uille baseballers on top of the game 11 -0. The game was to be held on the Pacific fie ld the preceding Tuesday but beca use of ra in it was c a lle d . The condition on the Pirate fie ld prohibited its use so the game was played at C oquille. Frank N e e ly started throwing the b a ll and kept the Red Devils scoreless until the third inning. Then the Devils slam m ed out three hits to place a fiv e run lead over Pacific. Then again in the fourth inning the C o q uille team swung their big bat to pile up six more runs. M c N a ir, the Starting pitcher f o r C oquille, held the Pirates scoreless in the 1 1 -0 game.
