COUPLE RETURN The Roland Gerhardts of Port Orford have returned from a three-week tr a ile r trip to Mesa, A riz . They encountered balmy weather In Mesa but rain and snow both ways. How ever with th eir new 16-foot tr a ile r , they had a wonderful trip and didn’t let the weather bother them. Enroute home they stopped in W ild erv llle to visit M r. and M rs . O rv ille Ruth, fo rm e r res idents of Port O rford who a re enjoying retirem ent very much. The Gerhardts visited several r e t i r e m e n t areas such as Youngstown, Sun City and Apache Way near Mesa and found them almost perfect for older people, with everything fo r entertainment o r to help pursue a hobby. To a ll of Scott’ s friends, Butch told me that a ll of you a re concerned about him so I said I would w rite a le tte r telling the details so that a ll of you would know how he Is. F irs t of a ll, he was very severely injured. He has three doctors, including a neuro surgeon, a nose and throat specialist and an orthodontist. He was scheduled for immed iate brain surgery when D r. Boots and I arrived by Mercy Flight but the h ig h altitude caused a release of pressures enough to make brain surgery unnecessary. It was a small m ira cle I was told. He has a brain inju ry, but it Is not s e r ious as firs t suspected. He has a badly fractured low er Jaw, Jaw joint, upper jaw which is pushed back Into the mouth cavity as well as badly fractured. His nose and cheekbones are crushed like an eggshell and his sinuses are all chewed up as well as the inside of the mouth, nose and throat. His left eye Is as black as cpal and Is really swollen although the eyes themselves are not damaged. He has to breathe through a tube in the throat and has f i nally been able to sleep and can even snore through the tube. He can’t talk at all but can w rite notes and use sign lang uage. He makes him self under stood. He may have surgery on his face Monday If a ll of the swelling is gone by then.
