SCARCITY OF DUCKS

steelhead in the local streams.
I failed at that time to comment

of ducks
throughout the winter months;
especially the numlier of such

appeared from the lowlands of
the Coquille Valley.
Just a few j ears back It was
not unusual to glimpse thou­
sands of ducks feeding within
sight of Highway 101 (now 42)
between Riverton and Coquille,
between Coquille and Coaledo
and between the county seat and
M yrtle Point. They were esp­
ecially numerous during the
several weeks which lollowed
the closing of the season.
Today their old habitats are
almost entirely devoid of any
specie of those once great num­
bers that frequented such spots.

only hope of success for South
Coast anglers this week and that
hope is not very bright. A few
spring Chinook are rolling in the
lower holes but they are not
hitting. The river is dropping
and clearing so fishing should
pick up if the fish w ill just co­
operate.
The winter steelhead season
on south coast streams ends on
Friday, March 31. W ith fishing
