Off Season Shooting Offers Sport By M IL T GUYMON Oregon StateGameCommlsslon The seasons may be over for gam e birds and animals, but don’t hang up that rifle or shotgun Just yet. T h e re’ s a group of winged and four-footed targets on the unprotected list that w ill provide great shooting at all seasons of the year. So says the Oregon Game Commission, which reminds hunters that all that is neces sary to enjoy this off season shooting is a hunting license and the urge to go. Foremost on the non-game lis t is the abundance of rab bits, with several species found in almost every section of the state. This big cat doesn’t have to take a back seat to any animal as a worthy opponent to the hunter. Best success w ill be with the use of trained dogs, and the ani mal Is found In most sections of the state. Coyotes and foxes are aiso on the unprotected lis t. Both species are noted for their craftiness and their ability to befuddle the most experienced dogs and hunters. In addition to the sport there is some fur value If the pelts are cared -for properly. Pacific Loses Weekend Pair by Roger H ill P A C IF IC -M Y R T L E POINT Last Friday night Pacific just couldn't do anything right. O ut- reboimded by 25 grabs, out-b all handled by seven less turnovers, and com pletely out-shot by a m argin of 40 per cent, the hap less Pirates were dumped hari by M yrtle Point's big Bobcats. Both teams substituted frequent ly —cue out of m ercy and one out of desperation—and played to a f i n a l 7 9 -3 5 score. As an "o ff-n ig h t", It was d efinitely the worst showing the Pirates have put on this season. Rebounding was an especially one-sided show. The ta lle r Bob cats co m p letely controlled the backboards, collecting the huge sum of 47 grabs during the con test and holding the Pirate* to only 22. For the m a jo rity of the game, the height-blessed M y rtle Point boys planted a towering zone aroitnd the basket, forcing the Bucs to fire from far out. And, If this wasn't enought to hurt the Pirates, their shooting turned icy cold. In m aking only seven shots during the whole game, Pacif ic's shooting average dropped to the a ll tim e low of 16 per cent. M eanw hile, those big, tall Bobcat* kept dropping the b all tlrough th eir basket from six to ten f e e t away. S tatistically speaking. M y rtle Point shot 12 more tim e* from inside the key area 12* x l 5 ' from the basket) than they shot from outside it. Considering this, i f * no won der that they managed to regis ter a hot 56 per cent from the floor. The Bobcats, after building up a ju ic y 17 point lead by the h alf, could safely afford to substitute freely, especially considering that Pirate coach Keith Law was tfeing the sazr.e thing—trying to find same effective com bina tion to handle the M yrtle Point iquad. Everybody played and everybody scored for the Bob cats—n i n e players scored be tween six and thirteen points— presenting an almost rid icu lously balanced attack. PACIFIC-CO Q UILLE STRIPED SKUNK Another bonus animal might be the striped skunk. Here again, good fur has a market value. In the same haunts as the chemical w arfare artis t, hunters w ill find the raccoon, masked prow ler of the night. If you once hear the full bay ing of a ‘coon dog on a crisp night under a full moon, you’ll have had It , for you’ll be out after this masked bandit again and again. Though they don’t hole up fo r the complete w inter, black bears tend to move around less, especially those east of the Cas cades, where deep snow and cold makes it desirable for these animals to takelongnaps. Balmy days on the west side w ill find some activity, and following the spring thaw the hunter w ill find much move ment. E arly spring w ill find black bear leaving their den and wandering over wide areas. Again, dogs w ill enhance the chance for success. Hunters should check the big game reg ulations on black bear, since these animals are classed as game animals In some areas of the state. As spring d a y s become w arm er, a whole host of off season targets present them selves. During the winter most members of the rodent fam ily go into true hibernation. Once they sack out, they’ re gone for the w inter. Come spring and the waking period, a fierce hunger drives them to the upper sun lit world. The large colonies of gray diggers, marmots and other digger squirrels car re ally keep the shooter busy. It might also be mentioned that in areas where these earth movers are common, you w ill be doing the farm e r or ranener a big favor In getting rid of some of these pests. Stop by Coquille lead to a slakey six, but couldn't capitalize. Coquille fin a lly wrapped up the contest w ith a 10 point victory m argin, 4 4 -34 . Good defense was the key fac tor in the Pirates' near success. Pirate coach Law, realizing that the Coquille offense is centered around their two guards, Randy Yager and Dave Glenz, concen trated the Bucs on stopping them in particular. To give an idea of their threat, the night before Yager alone gunned in 28 points in the Devils' 81-67 victory over Brookings. Both guards were held to only eight points apiece by Pacific, com pi emen ting the Pir ate defense on what Coquille coach Gingam labled as one of the besttheyhad played against all season. Top scorers for the game were Coquille's H ickam and W alker, w ith 15 and 10 points, respec tively. Pacific presented a rather balanced attack, led by Smokey Storm's nine points and M ik e M cW illiam s' eight. Foul shot* alone were nearly enough to provide the victory m argin for the Devils. Coquille took advantage of eight more points from the g ift stripe than did the Pirates, making 14 in a ll. The B ucj only made six for the evening. PACIFIC FA C U LTY TO PLAY GOLD BEACH The Pacific high school le t termen's club w ill again sponsor a faculty basketball game at Pacific next Monday J an.23. The Pacific faculty w ill go up against the teachers from Gold Beach in a game at 7:30 p. m. Admission to the game w ill be 5 0 cents for adults and 25 cents for students. The faculty played a p relim inary game over the Langlois town team on Jan. 16. The final score w a s 108- 53 w ith K eith Nelson sinking nearly h alf of the points far the faculty.
