College* for Oregon** Future I * a c itiz e n *’ group formed In early 1004 to help build public understanding of the problem * furlng post-high school educa tion In Oregon. The group waa organized by form er governors, Charles A. Sprague, Kobert D. Ilolm ea and Elmo Smith, and other leaders throughout the state who be lieve that the problem * of ed ucation are the problem * of the people. Gov. Sprague defined the group’ s role a * a "two-way c h a n n e l of communication, bringing the view* of the gov erning board* to the p e o p le - aid the view * of the people to the boards and other policy making tiodtea.’ County com m ittee* of Col lege* for Oregon** Future w ere established at the same tim e, and most continue to be active today. The group’ * f lr * t project was to explain to the people of the state the Implications of the Higher Education Facilities Bond M easure of 1964, which authorized $25 m illion In gen eral obligation bond* for the State System of Higher Ed ucation and $5 m illion for com munity colleges. The measure waa overwhelmingly approved by the vo ter*. Since that tim e, College* For Oregon’ s Future has set up sev eral projects to help gener.it>- public awareness and under standing. One I * a television series that Is now in 21* second year. The programs feature wide-ranging discussion* by leaders In education, Industry, business and all walks of life . Another project w astheSym - poatum on Post-High School Education, a two-day confer ence held recently In Portland that brought together people who are Interested In the prob le m * faring education. Colleges For Oregon’ s Fu ture w ill follow up this under taking with regional meetings that w ill bring the highlights of the symposium to the people. These meetings w ill give the people of Oregon the oppor tunity to take part In the ex change of Ideas concerning post-high school education.
