Ask About Detalla Today I
by Roger HUI
The story of many a barket-
ball game hat been decided at~
the free throw line, a fact that
both Pacific and Douglas high
school I are now w ell aware. For
the weekend garnet of D ecem
ber 16 and 17, between the two
schools were lost by thoae free
ane-pototert. Both teams shot
close to an equal number of
basket» during the g a m e , yet
each loot a struggle by the num
ber of free throws they gave the
other team.
Friday night was the Pirates'
victory. Pacific held on a one
basket edge over the visiting
Trojans, but capitalized on 21
of the 36 foul shots the Douglas
team gave them to pull out their
first victory of the season. Sat
urday night, on the other hand,
Douglat m erely kept up with the
Pirate scoring total throughout
the game, via 10more foul shots
than the Buct, and managed to
up-end their challengers to the
final moments of the game.
PACfflC-DOUGLAS
By outscoring Douglas to ev
ery quarter, Pacific posted a 57-
48 victory over the visiting Tro
jans Friday night. Although the
Pirates scored only one mare
field goal than Douglas, Pacific
capitalized on 21 of the 36 foul
shots the Trojans gave them.
Rebounds, too, played a vital
roie in the outcome of the game.
Led by Smokey Storm's 13, the
Pirates out-rebowided the Tro-
Jans4S-29, giving them 16 more
chances to score than Douglas.
Add that to seven less turnovers,
and t h e Pirates' offense was
ready to roll.
Smokey Storm, the top re
bounder, also earned high point
honors for the night, shredding
the net for 23 counters. Mike
McWilliams and Don Dahrens
also shined for the Buct, chalk
ing up 12 and 10 points, respec
tively. Other Pirate scorers were
Charles Bates with nine and J ack
Preston with three,
Ed Baird collected top scoring
honors far Douglas, contributing
17 points for the losers. Baird
was followed by Steve Buell
w it h seven and Jim Fox, Jerry
Dougherty and Bill Murphy with
six each.
SATURDAY NIGHT
Saturday night the Trojans
blasted out of a four-point def
icit to the final quarter to stun
the Pirates 66-48. The Pirates,
leading from the second quarter,
lost their lead late to the game
to a zone press and clock pres
sure, cooling their 41 per cent
shooting average, giving t h e
Trojans a 16 p o i n t winning
margin. Douglas scored 46 per
cent of their total points to the
last quarter.
Pirates' top scorer for the third
straight game was Storm with
19; McWilliams, 11; Dahrens, 9,
Preston, 6; Bates, 3.
Trojan top scorers were:Baird,
25; Murphy, 17; Fox, 10.
JV BASKETBALL
by Scott Rose
The Pacific JV team loet the
first of two games with Douglas
Friday right, Dec. 16, to a hard-
fought game that went Into ov
ertime twice, to a score of 55-52.
The Trojans outshot the Pir
ates with a 45 per cent average
from the field, to Pacific's 28
per cent.
Pacific's scores during the en
tire overtime cam e from foul
shots. Douglas ended with 29
fouls to Pacific's 17.
to Saturday's game, the Pir
ates retaliated with a 47-46 win
to a close, tense game.
Tophoopstere for Pacific were
Bob Fry and Terry Swee
w eeney to
the first game with 16 and 15
points r e s p e c t l v e l y . David
