Washington Trip Starts Action
“ I am pleased to see that the
President has finally acted to
release $250 m illion from
Fannie May funds to aid the
home-building industry and our
distressed forest products in
dustry.”
C o n g re s s m a n -e le c t
John
Dellenback of the Fourth Dis
tric t, in a news interview, em
phasized that the President's
actions were only a "token
begin: lng.” H i went on record
as urging the President to re
lease the other $750 m illion as
soon as possible.
The release of the special
mortgage funds followed D el-
lenback’s trip tc Washington,
D. C ., by less than a week.
" I certainly would not say that
my con ereiice with officials in
the Bureau of the Budget was
the only factor In their decision
to release the funds,” the Con
gressman-elect said, "but we
had a frier dly and mutually
informative meeting, and on its
conclusion I was assured that
the information I had given on
our serious need forlm m edlate
help in Oregon was helpful to
them and would be relayed to
the President.”
Dellenback met with officials
In the Bureau of Budget for sev
eral hours. He also conferred
with purchasing agents of the
Department of De'er.se.
Dellenback said that he found
the Department of Defense had
been purchasing less than their
originally scheduled amount of
lumber and plywood because
of lack of ships. ” At present
they are only taking about four
shiploads a month from O re
gon. They Indicate that they w ill
attempt to raise this quota to
slightly more than 12 shiploads
a month immediately. I have
asked that they push ahead on
this.”
" I have also talked with them
about the feasibility of ac
celerating t h e i r purchasing
quotas during the months of
December, January and Feb
ruary to help alleviate the
severe hardship we now face.”
While in Washington, Dellen
back also conferred with pur
chasing agents of the General
Services Administration, and
the heads of the Forest Service
and the Bureau of Land Manage
ment.
