F arm Bureau Convention Slated F o r Pendleton “ A g r i c u l t u r e Facing th e Challenge . . . W ill Fam ily Farm ing Die With Father?” la the theme for the 1966 Oregon Farm Bureau federation con vention In P e n d le t o n Nov. 13-16, according toJam esKes- aler, M ilton-Freew ater, con vention chairman. The convention program la being developed around this question with special empha sis on the young people In ag riculture today. An estimated 750 to 1000 persons are ex pected to attend the four-day meeting which is devoted to de termining Farm Bureau policy for 1967. The theme was one suggested by the U m atilla County F arm Bureau and came from the growing concern that agricul ture may be neglecting Its most I m p o r t a n t crop— Its young people. According to Kessler, many young men and women are be ing trained each year to take th eir place on the farm s and ranches of Am erica but when they graduate from their tra in ing they find that It is virtu ally Impossible to get a start In farming because of rising costs and land values. Thus frustrated, said Kes s le r, these young people turn to other Industries or to Jobs In businesses serving agricul ture. This leaves a void not now being filled on the farm s and ranches vhlch. Increasingly r e q u i r e the top minds fo r management. Kessler observed that In his area the Farm Bureau members are getting older and there are fewer and fewer young men taking part In the decisions im portant to agriculture because there are fewer young men farm ing. » It Is the purpose of the con vention this year to bring this problem cle arly Into focus and. to develop a positive program for bringing young people Into farming and into the decisions of agriculture, Kessler ex plained. “ If we do not do some thing about the increasing scarcity of our. most Im por tant crop,’ r Kessler s a id , “ fam ily farm ing, In fact, all farming, w ill die with fathft-.“ County Farm Bureaus ln O re - gon w ill be asked to encourage th eir under-35 members to attend the convention and w ill be asked In addition to pay a p re-reg istratio n fee for at least one young couple from their group. The more than 198,000cards, letters and other pieces of mall received by the Highway De partment during the 12-month period ending Sept. 19 repre sent the largest total ever re ceived, Cooper said. The high est previous total was in 1962, when 182,000 queries were re ceived. In 1965, questions came from 177,130 potential visitors. Most requests were answered by forwarding a copy of U ieD e* partm ent’ s new, 32-page color brocure, “ Oregon . . . fo o l Green Vacatlonland,’ ’ along with additional m aterial ta ilo r ed to meet the individual re quest, such as fishing, camp ing, rockhoundlng, and s lm lla t Item s. Although the department’ s survey of tourism for 1966 has not been completed, the m all Inquiries and reports from Ore gon resorts, motels, and cham bers of commerce give every Indication that expenditures w ill exceed the $250 m illion spent by out-of-state visitors in 1965.
