shorten the breath to a marked
degree. About the only push
ups engaged In by many hunt
ers, In o rd er to get Into shape
for the hunt, consist mainly
of pushing away from the dining
table— w ell loaded with food.
We have reference to the hunt
e r, not the table Itself.
Keep In mind, also, the fol
lowing simple rules at a ll times
while hunting. If they were
heeded by all hunters, gun ac
cidents would be Just about
non-existent.
The T ru e Sportsman:
1. T re a ts his gun with re
spect and Is always careful
where he points the muzzle.
2. Keeps the safety on until
ready to Ore and la positive
of his target. To keep bullets
from ricocheting, he never
tfioots at water or a hard, flat
surface.
3. Unloads his gun when not
In use and leaves the action
open. He stores guns and am
munition separately.
4. Loads his gun only when
In the field or ready on the
target range. He never climbs
or Jumps over obstacles with a
loaded gun.
5. Keeps his equipment In

always sure that he has the
proper load for his gun.

Cedar Root Rot
Symptoms Noted
A fungus disease known as
Phytophthora root rot Is k ill
ing Port Orford cedars at a
number of places In the area,
reports Coos County Extension
Agent David K e lr. There is
apparently no way to save a
tree that haa beoome Infected
with this disease and It should
be cut down, said the agent.
Presently, researchers at
Oregon State University are
trying to And a way to stop
this disease. Before a control
can be found, however, they
fear that the root rot Infection
w i l l spread through healthy
c e d a r stands, and they rec
ommend the use of other re
sistant native trees for plant
ings.
A Port Orford Cedar Infected
with Phytophthora root rot w ill
firs t turn pale green and then
»111 turn Into a reddish brown,
rust color. An Inspection of
the roots of a diseased tree
w ill show white fungus fila
ments laced throughout the
cambium layer. The disease Is
more likely to be found In
swales -and In poorly drained
ground, but is by po means
lim ited to such areas, said
K e lr.

Compost Pile
Good For Garden
Compost plies are a good way
to salvage the countless tons
of crop residue that goes to
waste each year, reportsCounty
Extension Agent David* K e lr.
M oreover, the gardener whohas
a compost pile also has a good
source of organic m atter and
plant nutrients to use on his
soli the following year.
A good compost pile should
be constructed of successive
layers of organic m atter topped
by fe rtiliz e r , soil and Ume.
The soli and lim e layers w ill
aid breakdown of the crop re s i
dues and w ill also keep down
odors.
F o r each square yard of com -.,
p o ft, add one' quart of a com
plete fe rtiliz e r such as 5 -1 0 -5 ,
one cup super phosphate and
one cup of Ume. Then cover
with a thin layer of soil after
the organic m aterial Is about
one foot deep. This procedure
should be repeated as each
foot of organic matter Is added.
Be sure to add enough water
to make layer moist as It Is
built.
