Tuesdays N IW S P A P IR P U B L IS H III ASSOCIATION N A T IO N A L B IA t TÄN BB D D B ram Equal And Fair .Amid much speculation about where Curry county commissioner candidate Robert O^Dfanmick stands on county matters came the answers in the form of a .paid political ad that appeared in the two other county pap ers under the signature of the candidate. .An ad, by .the way, that Is highly optomlstlc in the opening statement. Dimmick confidently states that he has been repeatedly, requested to publicly state "how I stand on some of the issues confronting the people I am to represent. " He didn't s a y people that "I MAY get to represent— if elected. " We have nothing against Mr. Dimmick despite his self-expressed confidence. But we also feel the need to point out a few things we think Mr, Dimmick has over looked. It would appear from recent GOP releases in all county newspapers, and from Dimmick's own statement to the voters, that he was the top choice of the Repub lican central com m ittee to take the place of Pat M as- * terson who withdrew from the race. The fact is that the GOP central com m ittee looked high and low for a re placem ent for Masterson and could find no one except Dimmick to accept the vachted spot. This is no reflec tion an Dimmick but it does minimize the importance of his selection because there was no competition to- the appointment. — Another interesting point DimmicC makes in dis cussing three county issues that will be on the ballot in November is his ability to NOT call a spade 1 spade. In the first place he is apparently attempting to divert the voters try misnomer. We refers to the issues as the " Cold Beach convention center, the Sixes park and the Lane Ranch golf course. Actually, it is a Curry county convention center at the fairgrounds in Cold Beach, a Curry county park on Edson Creek and a Cufry'county golf course at Lone Ranch promoted by Brookings In terests because all other efforts to finance the golf course failed. When it comes down to telling the voters where he stands on the issues he simply says that because he had no part in formulating any of the proposals and having n s personal interest in the furtherance of any of them, he feels that his opinion as to their long range stimulus to the economics of the area would only be an opinion. He also said tha W hether these proposals became reality should be left to the voters.. . and that he will support their wishes. “ It might be well to remember that the golf course proposal w asrejectedseveral times by the counte court and budget com m ittee and finally "farced" on the bal lot by a Brookings group because of the other two pro posals. They even wanted all three proposals on one measure but the court would only agree to put each proposal to a vote on its own m erit. It is also true that the outcome of the election does not bind the county court in any manner. “~ Mr. Dimmick states that he will pot Be drawn into any intim ation or duscussion of sectionalism between one end of the county and the other because his policy is fairness to all. It should be noted that he very defin itely expresses his feeling on sectionalism by that brief statem en t.. . "one end of the county and the other. " A m a n com pletely unbiased, who drew : no lines, would say between one area and another. Finally Mr. Dimmick's feeling about sectionalism is strongly pointed out in the fact (hat he recognized only Brookings and Cold Beach in his attem pt to reach the voters. Northern Curry county was very obviously Ignored when he chose not to place his advertisement in this newspaper so OUR reading voters would also know that he believes in equal and fair representation to all. ~ ", . king a drunk walk will not 1 him back to sobriety any r than letting him sit it off. sast that's the recent find- >f an experiment conducted he University of Edinburgh ology Dept. E dilor TO THE EDITOR Referring to the three contro versial Issues that will appear on the ballot in November, my opponent, Mr. Dimmick, stated in hisrecent political advertise m ent that he would abide by the wish of the voters. I, too, will abide by the wish of the people. I think, however, that th? people of Curry County are entitled to know how my opponent would have voted on these Issues had he been seated in my chair at the budget table. There will be other Issues coming up in the future just as controversial and just as important. He should get off the fence and let the people Snow where he stands. People know where I stand. I would like to explain to him that if he is elected to the of fice of Curry County Commis sioner, he will be only one mem ber on a board of three. He will be working with elected offi cials in the other departments who prepare their own budgets and run their own offices. He will be only one mtimber on a board of six u he sits at the budget table. Tie will also be governed by certain State stat utes. Promises will be -hard lor him to keep, I commend him on his pledge, "Equal and Fair Representation to AU." The perfect newspaper could never print church notices, for there are those who don't be lieve - in churches and who op-" p o s e religion, and-the paper shouldn't offend these people. "" It goes without saying the perfect paper will never carry reports of city council meetings or school boar d he ar in gs, or c ourt trials, or publ ic he arings. First, a lialf mile section of die Win- chuck County Road, adjoining t h e Siskiyou National Forest Camp Ground, nine miles up the Winchuck River from die state highway, is a disgrace to Curry County tor die reason diat it is much too narrow and extremely dangerous to travel over. The county has penetrated die Sis kiyou National Forest wldi road Improvement In this area for a- bout tliree miles, and lias wid ened and black topped die road, but somehow, lias failed, Inex cusably, to take care of the last one half m ile section between Elk Creek and the picnic grounds. Leaving the picnic grounds, and going in an easterly direction up the Wlnchuck River, the For est Service has widened and built up the service road to al most boulevard [reportions for about four miles, and showered it with a heavy coat of crushed gravel, but like die county, It too has failed to improve die dis graceful, narrow and dangerous half m ile section of road re ferred to here above.
