pete in the district w r e s t l i n g
tournament. T h e y were Gary
N i e l s o n at 123 pounds, Jerry
Forty at 136 pounds, M a r v in
House at 141 pounds, and Greg
McDonald at Heavyweight. The
district tournament w a s com ­
prised of champions and runners-
up in each w eight class from the
Sunset L e a g u e and the Coast
League. The m eet was held at
Reedsport Union H ig h School,
March 5.
Gary N i e l s o n lost his first
match to Reedsport's h i g h l y
rated Jerry Abel by a six to one
score. Jerry Forty narrowly m is­
sed upsetting 1 a s t year's state
champion, Dave Abel, when he
w a s declsioned by a score of
fo u r to two. Marvin H o u s e ,
wrestling at 141 also lost his first
roundm atchto one of last years
state titiiits, Dan Liming, an­
other Reedsportmatman. Fresh-
m a n heavyweight, Greg M c­
Donald was declsioned by Mar­
tin HUI of Taft.
Second round m a t c h e s saw
Pacific's grapplers com e up a -
gainst several foes fr o m their
own league. Gary N ielsen nar­
rowly missed defeating Sunset
Six champion, Bob Adams, who
he was leading by one point with
only seconds to go, released his
hold upon hearing a whistle on
the adj oining mat which he m 1s-

his match. Jerry Forty pinned his
man to tie up third place, and
in doing so, earned die right to
challenge Gold Beach's George
Swem for the right to go to state.
Marvin House decisianed Ever­
ett Johnson of Brookings when he
t i e d up the m atch with points
for riding tim e and went on to
win in over-tim e. Greg McDon­
ald decisioned Ken Gedney of
Mapleton to take third place, an
honor far a f r e s h m a n in such
tough league com petition.

ters in the first m eet of the sea­
son at Powers last S a tu r d a y .
Bates scored 9 points and J ohn
scored 5 points to lead the scor­
ing for che depth weak pirate
t e a m . Coach Keith Law said
that the problem was that there
were plenty of third, fourth, and
fifth places taken by Pacific but
t h e y didn't have enough first
and second p i a c e rs. Another
obvious problem is t h e sm all
size of the team . Each member
of the t e a m must com pete in
f r o m 3 to 5 events in order to
field a full team. BUI McDonald
and Welt Stauffer also showed
good p r o m is e as Gary Burton
s h o w s weU in the dashes and
D a v i d Knapp finished w ell in
distance running. All races were
