E U , a prosperous lumber man, decided to give five sta tion wagons to the Red Cross. He Intended to claim the gift as a charitable deduction on his income tax return for that year. He got an auto dealer friend to sell him the station wagons for $2,000 each though the reg u la r re ta il value of the cars was $3,000 each. However, he had to agree not to sell the cars it___a»-. The comm ta llon Is also Interested In stock ing kokanne In these lakes to provide an additional game fish tiesldes the cutthroats. Chem ical treatment here Is plam«d for October. Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Colson announce t h e engagem --"' if their daughter, Linda M arie, to N icholas Antony Betsakes U, of Hollywood, C alifornia. H e is the son of Mrs. Jean D et-ant of Cross to get the reduced price. When E ll reported the gift on his income tax return, he listed It as worth $15,000 since that was the regular re tail price of the cars, even though he paid only $10,000. The Inter nal Revenue Bureau challenged his right to claim a charitable deduction of more than $10,000. Do you think E ll Is entitled to a deduction of $10,000 or $15,000 for the gift of the station wagons. The court held that his de duction should be only $10,000, what he paid for the ear», In stead of $15,000, th eir fa ir m ar ket value. If he had been able to buy the five cars without agreeing not to resell them, and had not been bound by his agreement to give them to the Red Cross, the value of his gift might have been the fa ir market value of the five cars, or $15,- 000, the court said. Since he bought the cars not for resale but solely for a c h a r i t a b l e g ift, he could not claim a de duction of more than he paid fo r the cars. R i v e r s i d e .
