Alice Alice Wakeman Bo-man was honored for her years of service to education In Curry County by the County Intermediate D istrict Staff on Sunday at the home of Edith W. Jones in Port Orford. Co-hostesses w e r e Donna Churchill and Edna Alexander. M rs. Bowman Is r e t i r i n g after teaching for 38 years, with 32 of those years In Curry County. Mrs. Bowman, daughter of two pioneer families, received her elementary and high school education In Gold Beach, and she was a member of the first graduating class of Gold Beach Union High School. After attending Oregon Nor­ mal School for one year, she started her teaching career at Langlois. She also taught at Sixes, Elk River and Wedder- burn. She lived In Corvallis from 1921 to 1934 and during that time taught six years In Benton County schools. She returned to Curry In 1934 to teach the Wedderburn school for the next 11 years. In 1943, the school board decided to send the five pupils to Gold Beach. M rs. Bowman went to Gold Beach as principal and served In that capacity until she was forced to take sick leave for two years (1951-53). On re­ turning to the classroom she was selected to be the reaolng teacher for D istrict 3C. Last fall, she accepted the position of Reading Teacher for the County Intermediate District. She has been active In 4-H club work as well as professional organizations. After spending the majority of her life in the schoolrooms of Curry County, Mrs. Bowman is looking forward to devoting more time to her hobbles and her grandchildren. In tribute for her outstand­ ing service to education, she was presented an orchid cor­ sage aid a retirem ent pin.
