When First National'» Springfield branch manager and this lumberman counted the
annual growth rings on this massive Douglas fir stump, they discovered the tree's age to
I»; 340 years. It would make up into about 7,000 hoard feet of lumber. The Douglas fir
is the most prevalent variety of forest tree in Western Oregon, which contains a huge
share of the nation’s standing timber reserve. Douglas fir is logged < lean, to entourage new
growth, and on rough ground such as this, high lead logging with spar tree, cable and
donkey engine is the most practical method.
