It’ s the social drinker who has Just a few drinks who is the tdggest high way menace, according to How ard Eddy, executive secretary of the Oregon T ra ffic Safety- Commission. "The drunk d riv e r, weaving and uncertain, Is well-marked In tra ffic and other drivers can usually avoid him ,” Eddy said. But the d rive r who has Just had a few drinks, he commented, may be capable of steering the car yet definitely unfit to be behind the wheel. Eddy said the relaxed feeling that g e n e r a lly accompanies drinking not only gives the d ri ver a false sense of security, lo t reduces his reaction time and Judgment enough to quickly Involve him In an accident. High Tides Choke Beaches “ For Instance, when your re flexes are dulled by alcohol and you are Just one-half second late In braking at 45 miles per hour, your car w ill travel over 25 feet farther than If you were norm al,” Eddy said. "Those 25 feet could well n.ean the difference between avoiding—o r {«corning Involved in--an accident. . . and It only takes one drink to begin the reflex-dulling process!” Eddy also pointed out that, although the d riv e r doesn’t rea lize it, two drinks can hamper vision as much as wearing dark glasses at night. The Oregon T ra ffic Safety Commission urges those who plan to drink toasts to the New Year to arrange a ride home with someone who doesn’t. Eddy also cautioned drivers who don’t Intend to drink to be extra watchful fo r those who do. “ Give everyone a little extra room on the road during New Year’s E v e ,” he a d v is e d . "Some of our citizens may not see the New Year . . . don’t you be one of them!” e f T t s NDAR he com plied w ith o r finders may he charged w ith a misdemeanor. Several previous requests by the PTA and c ity council were denied by the Highway Depart ment w ith an alternate sugges tion that the school establish an older boys safety patrol or an adult safety patrol at the cros sing. In th e ir denial of earlier requests, the Department had a ls o m aintained among other things that v is ib ility w ithin a reasonable distance of the cros- Youth Caught For Phone Calls sing and the 2 0 -m. p. h. tpead signs was sufficient to warn m o torists of the school zone. Another alternate plan from the c ity council was to change the croasing zone from the north comer of 12 St. and the high way to the south comer. This request w as approved by the Highway Department but was vetoed by the school because it would remove the patrol from the l i n e of sight of the main entrance to the grade school and increase sidewalk congestion. Earlier this month police chief Harold Hight studied the situa tion and submitted a new request containing three type-w ritten pages o f reasons for the blinker signs. He received a reply this week w ith approval from Glen Clark, Division T ra ffic Engin eer, for th e ir installation. Clark said the cost to erect the si gns would run about $ 1,000. He said the c ity would have to foot $500 o f the cost and agree to maintenance and supplying e le c tric ity for their operation. The sign would be span-wire mounted d ire ctly a c ro s s the croasing zone w ith individual flashers for both north and south bound tra ffic lanes. C ity police apprehended a 17- y e a r old lo ca l boy Christmas morning who is believed respon sible for m aking numerous l i centious phone calls to several women in the Port Orford area over the past several months. City police ch ie f Harold Hight said the youth was apprehended •bout 2:30 a. m. December 25 after he had entered a local res idence.
