Although the prevalence of this deadly disease has been greatly reduced by vaccination and closer supervision of fam­ ily pets, it continues to be a threat. The possibility always exists that unvaccinated pets may be bitten by a stray dog, cat or wild animal that has the disease. Counties Receive Game Monies Oregon c o u n t i e s received over $43,000 from the Oregon Game Commission. According to P. w. Schneider, state game director, the game commission was assessed $45,690 In taxes and other assessments on com­ mission-owned lands. This fig­ ure, for the 1963-64 fiscal year, Is slightly higher than for the previous year and brings the total for the past five years to over $200,000. The game commission owns approximately 66,000 acres of land, the m ajority of which are used as game or fish man­ agement areas, public shooting grounds, and p u b l ic access sites. Management uses Include elk and deer winter ranges, waterfowl refuges, upland game production areas, and public fishing lakes. Trout from Down Under Planted Here One hundred thousand New Zealanders arrived In Oregon recently and are now being prepared for permanent res­ idency. The arriva ls from the land down under were rainbow trout eggs and they are now residing in the hatching (roughs of the game commission’s Oak Springs hatchery on the Des­ chutes river. The eggs were flown to Hawaii by Canadian Pacific Airlines and then transferred to North­ west Orient A irlines for the last leg of their hop.
