Hutton emphasized Fast Cars Are Like Hot Nitro If you had a choice of d riv ing your car at 35 m les per hour into a large tree or running it o ff the top of a four story budding, w h ic h would you do? Actually, it wouldn’t m ik ° any difference as to the end rr«ult because b o t h situ ations would be equally de structive. These com para I've figures were established after a study of speed versus energy bv the Oregon State Highway Depirt- ment. The department no nted out that drivers should he awaro of this n"te” t :a' destruc tive energy that could result from an automobile accident. For example, an avenge medium-sized car earning four persons can develop enough energy at 60 miles per hour to be equivalent to the destructive power of one and one half cups of nitroglycerin. If the car had a head on col lision or struck a solid obiect at this speed, the destructive power would be equal to set; ng o ff a cup and one half of nitroglycer n in the car. The Highway Department also pointed out that when a d rive r doubles his speed he increases the potential destruc- »:ve e re rfy o f the car bv four times. The study also shows that jd a perron were to strike an immovable object head-on at thp posted freeway speed of 70 miles per hour, he would have about the same chance o f surviving as he would from a f«B from a sixteenth floor window ^ Z /Ä S ^ F /A tT T© N E W S ■ 63-O O FW More Concession Space Available Person» « till wishing conces sion space at the park lo r the Fourth o f kilv are requested to contact chairm an W ilb u r Green im m e dia te ly. In noting the occasion the Marine Board reports that pleasure boating fatalities would be practically nil if the occupants of small boats would make it a practice to wear life jackets Capsizing and sim itar acci dents are unexpected a n d o i re often the victims are on their way to the bottom while their life jackets o r buoyant seat cushions are drifting away. The boating accident reports from which statistics are com piled indicate that of the seven fatalities recorded so far this year six would have been pre vented had the victims been wearing life preservers The state law requires each boat to have on board an approved life-saving device for each, person aboard.
