U nw ary Birds These birds are of a very unwary nature More often than not, when flushed, they w ill alight upon the lower branches of a tree and proceed to i l l there like a real fool hen until dislodged by a bullet, or even a hand-thrown m isslr of some sort. They are apparently a very vain bird, for many tim e,, with their neck feathers really ruffed and their tail feathers outspread like a turkey gobbler, 1 have seen them strut proudly along a tra il only a short distance from me . both here in our native state and in the British Columbia wilderness. Years ago, along the ash ridges at the edge of various marshlands in the Coquille Valley, and where wild crab- apples grew in profusion, it was nothing unusual to encoun ter a dozen or more such birds during a single duck-hunting trip We have had bird dogs tree as many as throe and four of them at a time in a single crab apple thicket. They would sit there, craning their necks at hunter and dog until each was shot from its perch in turn, if a hunter hap pened to be "native pheasant" hungry at the time It is without doubt due to such a show of downright dumbness on their part that they have become virtually exterminated in many parts of the state In our opinion the only crown that "Old Ruff” merits is one awarded him for being our dumbest game bird. m ».» w / I»/ V /J » Il I tIU» f« r ith h itu itl < It. 2 Ways To SAVE OUR LOW PRICES S and II GREEN STAMPS Port Orford DRUGS !
