Two Admit Tool Theft Two Gold Beach men have a d m i t t e d to taking between $2,000 to $3,000 worth of tools from the Grosbeck and Durbin Contractors operation on t h e Soutn Bank Road, some 19 miles up Rogue River, according to the Curry county sneriff's office. The two are also charged with t h e t h e f t of a "short logger" truck from the Brownie Coldiron Logging Co. Bail of $3, 000 each was set for Collins O' Neil, 18, and Arthur Cobb, 20, and they were bound over to tne grand jury by Dist rict Court Judge Sam Hall. The tools were recovered at the tim e of the arrest at Nesika Beach Thursday. The log truck, discovered hidden back in the brush up Rogue River, had been extensively damaged with an iron bar before it was abandoned. The windshield and lights had been broken and the cab and fenders smashed i a Western States Plywood; Mrs. Pat Starr, for the Business and Pro fessional Women, and M cW il liams, for the chamber of com merce. In addition to a brief from the chamber, McWilliams also entered as supporting exhibits photographs of a Coast Guard boat rescue and a harbor full of fishing boats, several clippings from the Port cJrford News con cerning port activities and re action to announcement of the intent to close the lifeboat sta t i o n in the form of published statements by local people. /An editorial that appeared in the News last April was also pre sented by George Hahn. In a personal statement, Cur ry county sheriff Bill Gauntlet! noted that his office has relied on assistance from the lifeboat station in land rescues on recent occasions and that Coast Guard patrols on the Rogue River have been a major factor in the pre vention of l i v e s and property losses. Carl Back, State Representa tive, appearing as a private c it izen, noted that Curry county h a d recently been the fastest growing county in the state, that progress is continuing here and Coast Guard services are further required because of the port's potential and future. The Coast Guard saved me from possible disaster recently, said EX. Chester Boots, and pos sible the lives of the three peo ple on my new boat. He explain ed that he had developed engine trouble in the vicinity of Fish Rock. His anchor wouldn't hold because of deep water, making his situation d r a s t i c But the C o a s t Guard responded to his call and rescued the boat about SO f e e t before it would have crashed against the rocks. Adolph Windmaiser, Ameri can Legion Commander, noted that the Coast Guard had been v e r y helpful in assisting with local fire protection, even quel ling one fire by themselves. He also cited their help in provid i n g a bugler, color guard and rifle squad for various observ ances. Charles Haines said the Coast Guard has becom e an institution here, a friendly beacon to fish ermen, sportsmen and others. To lose it would be both a physical and emotional loss. The poten- t i a l here is undetermined but extensive, we need the Coast Guard. Answering a question by Pat Starr, C a p t Carlson said that plans call for maintaining the boathouse, boat and fuel storage as a standby u n it and the re maining property would revert to the state for use as a park. Lawrence M iller was told that money was not the prime reason f o r discontinuing the station, but that it was to put a station where it would do the most peo ple the most good Orris Smith, com m ercial fish erman, said he was fam iliar w ith both Bandon and Port Orford and that because of physical char acteristics, it would be better to leave the station her and put a standby lifeboat at Bandon, where you can't even get across the bar about nine months out of the year. Smith also cited comparative rescue cases at the two locations that pointed out his reasoning. Port Orford has now been heard. Presentations at the hearing w ill next be evaluated by C o a s t Guard Headquarters in Washing ton, EL C. However, we should continue to be heard, M cW illiam s said, rather than sit back and wait. He u r g e d that residents keep the fires going by writing their con gressman and urging their sup port in keeping the lifeboat sta tion activated. The more fuel, the bigger the fire, he said.
