RESERVE MEETING The Port Orford unit of the Curry County Sheriff's Reserve w i l l hold its regular meeting next Monday, July 22, 8 p .m ., at the city hall. In a communication July 11 to A dm i r a l Edwin J. Roland, Comm sndart, U.S. Coast Guard, Congressman Robert B. Duncan sharply criticised the closure of the Pott Orford Coast Guard Life boat Station as a waste of tax dollars and perm itting another government Installation to rot from non-use. Duncan said he was in agreement w ith reactiv ating the station at Bandon, but in complete disagreement with closing the station here. "N o one w ill work harder for economy in government than I, Duncan said, but I don't believe in closing up the fire department Just because there have been no s e r io u s f i r « in the last year. Neither do I believe that we should close the Coast Guard S t a t i o n at Port Orford simply because the calls over the past year have not been considered extrem ely critical. It seems to me that search and rescue units, lik e fire departments, exist to perform in emergencies. One never knows when they w ill be needed and h o p e s they never are. But w h e n they are, they should be available." "1 shudder to think of the re percussions should a life be lost that might have been saved w ith a manned station at Port Orford. I don't care to assume that re sponsibility and I am prepared to support the Coast Cutrd in the solution of such budgetary pro blems as would enable them to continue at least m in im al man ned fac ilitie s at Port Orford. ' The economic im pact of loss of this station at Port Orford is obvious, Duncan said. He pointed out that Curry county is a low employment area and eligible for APW p r o j ects. "Here is a needed service w ith an Install ation already b uilt and in use and the Government is pulling the payroll out of the county. " Duncan urged further attention in the m atter, noting that Sen ators Wayue Morris and M a urine Neuberger joined in this request It appears, however, that the Coast Guard is not giving fur ther consideration to any pleas, V ice A dm iral D. McMorrison, A c t i n g Commandant of the Coast Guard, maintains the de cision to move ths manned sta tion to Bandon is "adequate to discharge our statutory- mrw-in. s ib iliti« and represents the best utilization of available person nel and equipment. " TJwugh the Coast Guard has fa ile d to honor a request by the cham berof commerce for a pub lic hearing on the move , M c Morrison told Duncan he could be assured that the needs of the Port Orford community w ill be kept under close and constant surveillance and that as those needs change, appropriate ac tion w ill be taken to provide the required degree of service. Curry Radio Club Plans Picnic Arizona Ranch has been cho sen for the Curry Radio Club picnic, to be held Sunday, July 2 1 r, The potluck picnic w ill start at 10 a. m. wtyh dinner at noon. Coffee, cream and sugar w ill be furnished. Everyone interested in C it izens Band and Am atuer Rad'o is invited to come. Third Rabid Bat Found A third rabid bat has been found in Curry county, this tim e on the Hunter creek area, ac cording to Jack Wright, county sanitarian. We apparently have a rabies epidemic in bats here, W right said, and he stressed that any one who is bitten by an anim al of any type should contact his personal physician im m ediately a n d f o l l o w h is advice as to treatment. Pets, in particular dogs, who have not been inoculated f o r r a b i e s should receive inocu lations. Persons seeing animals, es pecially bats, which appear to be sick, should be extrem ely careful not to handle them and should caution their children to leave them alone. Any prudent adult, who is be ing careful, can capture or k ill a sick bat, Wright said, but he cautioned that they should not touch the bat since there is a possibility that rabies can be transmitted t h r o u g h the bat's u r i n e or through a cut in the skin of the person handling it. Bats which are behaving nor m a lly s h o u ld be le ft alone, W right continued. The anim al, if possible, should be placed under observation, since this i the only protection the ind ivid ual has. The location of the rabid bats found so far, at Hunter creek, Pistol River and at Loeb State park up the Chetco, indicates the rabies is wide spread,Wright commented. Anyone seeing a skunk out in the daytime is asked to notify Wright, since it is felt that rabies may also be present in the skunk population.
