An ominous appearing map
was pictured in the March 23rd
isaue of The Saturday Evening
Post which estimated that in a
m assive nuclear attack the blast
heat would kill 62 m illion Am
ericana, without fallout shel
ters, and radiation could kill 46
m illion more The solace is ex
trem ely slight, but an interest
ing highlight on the chart is that
Oregon is the only state out of
forty eightwhere no shelters are
required for survival. There are
those who b elieve that this art
ic le titled "Survival of the Few
est" might cause a great number
of people to decide to locate
here. We have facetiously said
many tim es that Oregon was the
least-publicized of all the states,
but by colorless c o n t r a s t , it
looms large on this map.

Signs of Spring: The Whales
were playing in goodly number
near the coast line recently, as
they do annually on their trek
north; flocks of geese have been
buzzing us from above as they
head in the same direction. One
wonders if they' did not think
they had their tim e signals garb
led last week when the weather
was so rough. Wednesday’s storm
was highly reminscent of the one
which occured on Oct. 12th,and
w e are still wary.

Death and taxes are said to
be the only things a person can
be sure of About the only dif
ference between them is that
you know in advance when your
taxes are due, and the govern
ment eases the burden by with
holding payments from your
paycheck
Even though you don't know
in advance when death w ill
come, you can help ease the
burden for your fam ily by plan
ning ahead" for financial con
cerns at time of death, says
Mrs Dorothv Sherrill M iller,
former Oregon State University-
extension home management
specialist.
Mrs M iller is the author of
•When Death Comes," a new
bulletin produced as part of the
OSU Extension Service program
in fam ily finance.
It gives information on im
portant financial matters at
time of death — such as fun
eral and burial costs, hank ac
counts, safe deposit boxes, life
insurance, and social security
benefits.
Planning Ahead Said Wise
The bulletin explains subjects
that every family — young or
old — should discuss long be
fore death occurs.
Mrs. M iller says she finds
that families who plan ahead
are better able to meet death
both financially and emotionally
than those who hesitate to talk
it over.
Other topics covered in the
bulletin
include:
cremation,
funeral insurance, choosing a
funeral director,
appraising
cemetery lots, cut-rate funerals,
shipping a body to a distant
place for burial, veteran's bene
fits, savings bonds, estate taxes,
and letters of last instructions.
Oregon residents may obtain
a free copy of the bulletin at
county extension offices or from
OSU Bulletin Clerk, Corvallis.
