I Battle Rock Is Wayside Not State Park VoL 5, No. 44 Port Orford, Curry County, Oregon_______ 104________T h u n ., Feb. 7, 1963 Having a Little Trouble Battle Rock, even though all signs at and leading to it say it Is a Slate Park, isn't. That was the word this week from Gover nor Mark Hatfield In reply to a letter from Adolph Windmaise*- asking the governor to intercede in a request from the Port Orford chamber of commerce seeking restroom facilities at the park. Gov. Hatfield said the High way Department reported to him that the usable area at the park Is less than one IO S and that it is classified as a wayside. The Dept. said a wayside does not have all the attributes of a state park but it is a spot where people can park and enjoy the view. Further, the area between the State of Oregon property and the ocean is private property, and Battle Rock, itsell, Is owned by the City of Port Orford, Hatfield said the Dept. informed him. A note of speculation though, it that the State Parks Division has indicated that it is interes ted in the possibility of acquir ing more land at the Battle Rock Wayside, and w ill again study the situation.
