9 M IN 0 OK S S U IN O ... TK Y T U F ... New Treatment Of Waste Told A Pacific Northwest engineer ing llrm has announced d e v e l opment of a new waste tre at ment proce« which c o n v e rt« sewage plant effluent Into high quality water, C o rn ell, H ow land, Haye« C S H A P E L Y T a li, whaprlv, re<lhmrci1 N ora Havden. One of the benefits of the new | w e e « Is that It removes syn thetic detergent chem icals from sewage and other wastes. The problem of household synthetic detergents In g r o u n d surface w ater has been causing Increas ing c o n c e r n among p u b 11c health authorities a n d w a t e r tupply agencies. More than two years of re search went Into the new pro- eras, Including pilot plant op erations at Lake Tahoe, C a lif, and Corvallis, Salem and P h il- oitioth, Oregon, As described inCulp*s report, new physical-chem ical methods are utilized In treatm ent of pri mary and secondary e f f 1 rent from waste treatm ent p la n ts . These methods remove complex organic chem icals not affected by conventional biological sew age treatment processes, as w ell as alkyl benzene sulfonates and phosphate fractions of household synthetic detergents. Pilot plant operations resulted In a finished product that Is c o l- orlrst, oderlrst, and ha» s c la r ity exceeding t h a t of m a n y drinking water supplies. It dors .not foam and is low In biolog ical nutrients. The new treatm ent consists of chem ical coagulation, primary absorbtion on alum flo e , rapid .lib e ra tio n t h r o u g h specially- constructed (lite r beds, and sec ondary adsorption on activated carbon. in his report C ulp saidi Based on the findings to date, it appears t h a t many of the shortcomings, bugaboos and coats Involved in the use of con ventional units to perform sim ila r I unctions have been over come, although this remains to be d e m o n s t r a t e d on a fu ll- scale plant. Improvements Include e l i m ination of raped plugging of f i l ters and fouling of carbon beds, sim ple hydraulic handling o f sludge, and accurate regulation •of chem ical dosage to corras— volum e and strength o f the waste by a continuous monitoring sys te m . Flocculation and fe ttlin g f-basins and m ixing and sludge equipment w h i c h are part of conventional treatm en' plants have been elim inated en tirely . Many new principles and pro cedures are u tU iied in the new treatm ent process, and patents have b e e n applied (or on the processes and control systems. Estimated construction costs fo ra plant u tilizin g the new pro cess are fairly reasonable, the engineers b e lie v e . Operatin g costs a r e higher than in con ventional rystems, but it may be po«ib le to reduce these costs by reclaim in g chem icals a n d regenerating carbons. W ater produced by the pro cess is suitable for groundwater recharge, industrial u ses and many other purjose*. according to the test results. It could be discharged into streams having highest use classifications, and in most cases the effluent water would be of better quality than the receiving stream. Crowing need for more exten sive treatm ent of wastes is fore seen by many authorities, to re c la im water for reuse and to preserve recreational value of lakes and streams. One of the p ilo t plant operations, at Lake Tahoe, was aim ed at phosphate rem oval to control algae growth w hich threatens the n a t u r a l beauty of the lake. The expcrm ental work on the new process was conducted by C u lp , W alter Conley and Tom M iksch, engineers. be : SURE T O VO TE TUESDAY NOVEMBER 6 AUTO INBU KAN CB F ill« INBUKANCB © Red M eW lUla— K P 3-0001 Kolen-Huggins Ins. bos w . nu» a t Tert Orford, See Rich Brannon at Crater Finance for a cash loan to cover those extra school expenses.
