Storm Affects Unemployment Seasonal layoffs and shut- downs due to the Columbus Day windstorm caused Oregon’s un employment insurance claim s to increase considerably compared to a month ago. according to J. K arl Corey, director, unem ployment insurance division. Unemployment insurance claims were up for the week ending Oct 18 from 9,652 four weeks ea rlier to 12,067 last week, Corey said. Rate of in sured unemployment was also up from 2.4 to 3.0. The number of claim s and rate, however, were still lower than a year ago when them were 13,334 claims and a rata of 3.3.
