Editor, Port Orford News, Port Orford, Oregon. Dear Mr. Soranson: In your paper of January 24 I noticed the ar ticle about “Roadside Beauty Progresses." I am very glad to see you give this particular subject space and proper headlines. I really believe that that is one of the things that is going to bring more returns to Oregon coast towns than any other non-resource attraction. ,You people have a wonderful coast Ifine, and when that highway is completed, it is going to be traveled by many people in preference to the inland route, due to the unusual scenery and the cool and desirable climate. The beautifying of your highways is a factor that will be very important with making proper impressions and making the trip desirable. Nature has already done a wonderful piece of work in beautifying that highway with the shrubbery and flowers that are found there in season. Even the cut-over lands north of your city are beautiful in their new growth of young cedar and fir. All that is required by your citizens to keep this road in its most beautiful condition is to keep the clearing fires from getting down close to the road and killing off this stand of young conifers, which will undoubtedly be replaced by brush if killed by fire. It would be a shame to lose any of the ground in your vidnity chiefly valuable for growing timber through careless fires, when it will grow a new crop of cedar in such a short time. Port Orford cedar is now one of the most valuable lumber trees found in the West, and it will probably grow to maturity in as short or a shorter time than the other imporant species. Another factor in your favor is that it is found only in a short section of country along the Oregon coast, of which your locality is about the cen ter. Your citizens should guard the lands suitable for growing this kind of a tree most jealously, be cause it is one of the resources that Nature has pro vided on the land, and if protected, will continue make a permanent source of revenue. Port Orford cedar alone is responsible for the building of many towns along the coast, and only those towns and communities that provide for a sec ond crop will be able to maintain themselves on this resource. I believe that the coast towns could well afford to start a “Protect Port Orford Cedar” slo gan for the benefit of their people. I ■ • I . . I ! I ¡ Very truly yours, G. E.
