DEVELOP OREGON COAST PORTS Bandon Football Schedule Opportunities for development of Oregon coast ports through completion of the Oregon Coast high way are the main tneme of a report by Professor Al fred L. Lomax of the school of business administra tion of the University of Oregon on “The facilities, commerce and resources of Oregon’s coast ports." He tells how the Coast highway has relieved these ports from isolation from one another and how lateral high ways may relieve them from isolation from the Wil lamette valley. He tells of the success, partial in most cases, in making channels through bars and bays and in building docks. They paid half the cost of channel improvement in order to induce the government to pay the other half. Their immediate tributary coun try is limited by the coast range, but railroads and highways have opened the way for them to draw traf fic from the Willamette valley, even from eastern Or egon. Their potential commerce is now restricted to logs and forest products, dairy products, sheep, wool, goats and mohair. Few Oregon coast ports are now in condition for ocean commerce, Coos bay and Port Orford being the best. The others need adequate depth of channel, con stantly maintained. This assured, they could be serv ed by ships which would connect with truck lines as sembling cargo over the six main highway routes into the Willamette valley. The short-cut truck route from Willamette valley cities to coast ports would divert traffic from the north-and-south railroad between San Francisco and Portland. The Oregon Coast high way would facilitate assembling of cargo at one port from several neighboring ports. Development of Oregon coast harbors has been stopped half-way by depression of the lumber indus try, which has provided most of their cargo. It should be resumed by the federal government without impos ing on the ports an obligation to bear half the cost which has not been imnosed on ‘he porkbarrel rivers and harbors of the east and south. Oregon ports should be ready for the new tide of commerce which is about to rise.
