THE HOME TOWN PAPER
Fortunate, indeed, is the commmunity having a home town
newspaper—the medium through which are recorded the local
happenings, the births, the deaths, marriages, social events, and
the multitude of other activities which go to make up our modern
daily life. The home town paper is an essential—the interpreter of
the many issues of our complex civilization. Its province is to sep
arate the wheat from the chaff, the good from the bad, and the
right from the wrong, laying bare the facts so that the public may
know the facts and act intelligently thereon, rather than being
guided by the word of mouth—too often highly colored for the
purpose of creating sentiment or prejudice. The watchword of a
newspaper is the TRUTH—the facts—as the Truth alone can en
dure and withstand attacks.
The local newspaper is the mirror through which the pro
gress of the community is viewed by the public at large, and, with
out progress there must necessarily be retrogression as commun
ities, like individuals, do not stand still—they either go forward or
backward.
The NEWS has served the Port Orford community for nearly
six years, and served it well. During that period it has supported
every meritorious civic movement, and its columns have contrib
uted largely to the success in securing the new $83,500 Coast
Guard station appropriation, Battle Rock park, the Sea Lion Ref
uge, the designation of the harbor as a seaplane anchorage, the
protectitng of the great dairy industry of the county from ruin by
preventing the creation of an ill conceived game preserve scheme
covering the lands west of the highway, the preservation of the
scenic beauty of the Coast Highway through the elimination of
commercial signs and billboards, the preservation of the deep
water harbor frontage for industrial harbor development, and the
preparation of the harbor of refuge improvement case which war
rants a favorable decision when the matter is finally heard on its
merits before the Board of Engineers.
Last year, to meet the general financial situation, the News
offered a Vacation Bargain subscription during the month of
July, which many took advantage of. This year the same offer is
being made during the month of June, the details of the offer be
ing found on Page 4 of this issue. This offer furnishes a conven
ient and inexpensive way to keep abreast of the progress being
made in the development of the great resources of this section of
Oregon, and, also, permits the public generally to aid in the pub
licity work necessary to carry on such work, by having copies of
the paper sent regularly to friends and relatives living at a dis
tance.
In making this annual offer the News renews its pledge to
work for the full development of the Port Orford area and of
Southwestern Oregon generally.
