The Port Orford Deep Water Harbor — KEY to the Development of the Vast Natural Resources of the Mid-Pacific Coast Empire PORT ORFORD NEWS Volume VI. Port Orford, Oregon, Tuesday, June 7, 1932. Lumber Tariff Assured; Industry to Feel New Lite When President Hoover affixes' C h u F ch P |a n A p p ro v e d THE HOME TOWN PAPER Fortunate, indeed, is the commmunity having a home town newspaper—the medium through which are recorded the local happenings, the births, the deaths, marriages, social events, and the multitude of other activities which go to make up our modern daily life. The home town paper is an essential—the interpreter of the many issues of our complex civilization. Its province is to sep arate the wheat from the chaff, the good from the bad, and the right from the wrong, laying bare the facts so that the public may know the facts and act intelligently thereon, rather than being guided by the word of mouth—too often highly colored for the purpose of creating sentiment or prejudice. The watchword of a newspaper is the TRUTH—the facts—as the Truth alone can en dure and withstand attacks. The local newspaper is the mirror through which the pro gress of the community is viewed by the public at large, and, with out progress there must necessarily be retrogression as commun ities, like individuals, do not stand still—they either go forward or backward. The NEWS has served the Port Orford community for nearly six years, and served it well. During that period it has supported every meritorious civic movement, and its columns have contrib uted largely to the success in securing the new $83,500 Coast Guard station appropriation, Battle Rock park, the Sea Lion Ref uge, the designation of the harbor as a seaplane anchorage, the protectitng of the great dairy industry of the county from ruin by preventing the creation of an ill conceived game preserve scheme covering the lands west of the highway, the preservation of the scenic beauty of the Coast Highway through the elimination of commercial signs and billboards, the preservation of the deep water harbor frontage for industrial harbor development, and the preparation of the harbor of refuge improvement case which war rants a favorable decision when the matter is finally heard on its merits before the Board of Engineers. Last year, to meet the general financial situation, the News offered a Vacation Bargain subscription during the month of July, which many took advantage of. This year the same offer is being made during the month of June, the details of the offer be ing found on Page 4 of this issue. This offer furnishes a conven ient and inexpensive way to keep abreast of the progress being made in the development of the great resources of this section of Oregon, and, also, permits the public generally to aid in the pub licity work necessary to carry on such work, by having copies of the paper sent regularly to friends and relatives living at a dis tance. In making this annual offer the News renews its pledge to work for the full development of the Port Orford area and of Southwestern Oregon generally. ] Chambers Want Butter Days; Seek To Aid Dairying Industry PORT ORFORD his signature to the huge revenue* The w°rk of the officials of the measure, designed to balance the Port Orford Community Church to In an effort to stimulate business LOCALS ‘ nation's budget, this wet* the broaden the scope of the support generally, the chambers of com lumber industry of the Pacific of l^e church through pledges, de- merce of the state are considering Northwest will breathe easier and s*ffned to meet the needs of each in the suggestion put forth by a Rose Donald McKenzie and George burg man to have two or three but take on a new lease of life, due to dividual, is meeting with response Woodworth, accompanied by the ter days proclaimed by the various thet fact that Senator Frederick on the Part of the citizens of the Misses Donna McKenzie and June states each month as an aid to Steiwer. with the able assistance of community.
