LET US SUPPORT THE CHURCH
The foundation stones of civilization are the church and the
school, and in them also lies the future of our Nation, our State
and our Community. Adequate provision is made by law for the
support of the schools through taxation, but the support of the
church is properly left on a voluntary contributory basis, as it is
the hearthstone around which the youth receives the benefit of
those influences which mold character and make for high stand
ard of citizenry. Every person receives the benefit of those influ
ences which mold character and make for high standard o f citi
zenry. Every person receives the benefit of the church influence,
whether they realize it or not, as it is largely that influence that
makes possible our standards of manhood and womanhood of to
day. Every person should, therefore, feel it a duty, as well as a
privilege, to aid in the support of the church. The future of the
world is in the hands of the young people of today—our children
—and the church influence on the lives of these young folk will
determine in a large measure what that future is to be.
During this period of economic depression—the tightness of
money—the church feels the pinch as does every individual,
through the smaller contributions of those who regulaYly support
its work, and through the inability to keep pledges made. Church
es must therefore find ways and means of maintaining them
selves, and in the case of the Port Orford Community Church it
is believed that a larger number of contributions may be had,
either in cash, or its equivalent in produce of all sorts, by an ap
peal to the community at large. The church officers have conse
quently decided on placing the matter squarely before the citizens
of the community in order that all may have an opportunity to do
their part toward the maintenance of the local unit of the greatest
institution in the world—the Church—and on page 3 of this issue
will be found a half page advertisement describing, just how each
may assist.
Whether the contribution be large or small is immaterial, as
it is the spirit in which the action is taken that counts and whether
it be money or a commodity is likewise immaterial as the commod
ity will be exchanged for money or used in lieu thereof in meeting
the Church’s obligations. The plan is designed to meet the need
of each individual.
The small percentage of the citizenry who have and are sup
porting the local church have done their part well, and at this
time in the affairs of the community it is but right and proper
that they should be adequately supported in maintaining this
great work. Let us all turn in, therefore, and do our bit toward
the support necessary to permit the local Church to adequately
carry on its work, and then feel that satisfaction and contentment
that comes from having performed worthwhile work.
