There is nothing so fatal to character as half- finished tasks.—D. Lloyd George. H. L. HOUSTON. M. D. COMMUNITY BUILDING Community building is similar to business build ing only in one respect—the vast amount of work re quired to produce the desired results. Here the simil arity ends, as in business building the work entailed is paid for, if the business is successful, either at the time performed or out of future income, while in com munity building the work is performed by the few who have the common interests of the community at heart and who are willing to accept their pay in the satisfaction that always goes with having accom plished worthwhile work. Community building re quires as much, if not more, vision than business building, and is essentially work that must be for the common good of all. To perform such work citizens must be above the petty selfishness with which many communities are seriously afflicted, and they also be impervious to the criticism that is usually aimed at those who venture into public affairs by those who never give a thought to doing things for the common good. It takes a stout heart, a thick hide, a thorough knowledge of community needs, and, above all, a deep conviction of the necessity of supplying those needs, to accomplish successfully for a community. Every man of a community should willingly give a portion of his time or his substance to the advance ment of community building. Unfortunately, how ever, there are but a few men in each community who are willing to run the gauntlet of jealous and unjust criticism to perform public work of a constructive character without monetary compensation. Such men are usually found supporting the local civic organiza tion engaged in trying to keep the community abreast of the time and advance its progress and usefulness, and every community owes those men a debt of grat itude that never can, or for that matter, never will be paid. Ijocally the Port Orford Chamber of Commerce has functioned continuously during the past five years, and in that period of time has accomplished much constructive work—work of an enduring char acter. It now has a major program in hand and well under way, which, when completed, will assure the future of the local community. It is a worthwhile program and should receive the support of all, with all petty jealousies, unwarranted criticism, and ani mosities supplanted oy that spirit of cooperation which spells success. Community building is founded on cooperative effort, and sound cooperative effort can accomplish much toward reaching the desired goal. Cooperation is the magic word for all commun ities desiring to make progress, while the lack of pro gress, or of retrogression, can usually be attributed to the lack of cooperation, accompanied by those worst of all community enemies—animosity—jealousy —and unwarranted criticism.___ ____ ______ May Tie Up Tug C.
