With an area of 50,647 square miles—larger than Pennsyl­
vania or New York—the MID-PACIFIC COAST EMPIRE in Or­
egon, embraces approximately the south half of the State—a vast
expanse of almost virgin territory insofar as the utilization of its
great natural resources is concerned. This region is over three
times the size of Switzerland, which has no seaport, and, based
on Switzerland’s population of around 4,000,000, is capable of sup­
porting upwards of 12,000,000 people.

Here is found one-fourteenth of all the remaining mer­
chantable standing timber in the United States—great deposits of
copper, iron, chrome, coal of a cooking quality, cinnebar, gold,
marble, limestone, granite, carbonic gas, a wide variety of com­
mercial mineral waters, as well as stream deposits of precious
metals, platinum, iridium, palladium, osmium and ruthenium—
vast areas of agricultural, horticultral and grazing lands—exten­
sive deepsea fishing banks—and a variety of attractions for the
pleasure seeker, including mountains, lakes, rivers, beaches, hunt­
ing, fishing, and scenic settings of an incomparable nature. The
area is blessed with climatic conditions adapted to the various
portions of the region, from the all year round equable weather
along the coast to the more rigorous conditions of the higher al­
titudes.
This great region is of sufficient size and contains such a
wide variety of natural resources that it is susceptible of becom­
ing a selfsustaining nation in itself, with the topography and
drainage such that, with the surmounting of the Cascade Range*
with a rail line, it is all tributary to a nearby tidewater outlet,
where the products of its forests, mines, factories, and i»ils will
find cheap water transportation to the markets of the world.
Nature, in her wisdom, supplied all the necessary attributes
to make a substantial and progressive region, and man has but to
follow the lines she has laid down to receive the benefits in the
greatest possible degree. Sound engineering follows nature’s lines
wherever possible, and sound engineering in the planning for the
full development of the MID-PACIFIC COAST EMPIRE in Ore­
gon dictates that improvement of the natural deep water harbor
at Port Orford will solve the problem, and at a fraction of the cost
of an effort to develop a tidewater outlet for the section by over­
coming greater natural barriers to create something of an artifi­
cial nature. Sound engineering means sound planning before the
money is expended, and sound planning means progress and pro­
fit for all time to come; and it further means that Oregon will re­
ceive the full benefit of its rich natural resources on which its
citizens have paid taxes for years instead of the major portion of
the profits going to labor and capital elsewhere.
