The meetings were arranged for bv Frank Seal, manager of the Port Orford Electric Company, and the editor of the Port Orford News, after conferring with sev eral of the larger landowners, for the express purpose of throw ing more light on a local subject in which the whole community is interested and which vitally affects its welfare, and with the un derstanding that they were to be taxpayers meetings—nothing more and nothing less. A School Directors to Confer 1 1 ii re<lulred Supt. to Salem Bogus Engineer Held State Bar Meets on Bay The reference to the coast guard station carries with it the implication that the construction of the station was designedly delayed. Such implication and inference is wholly at a variance with the facts which are set forth for the public to form its own opinion. The securing of the establishment of the coast guard station here resulted from two years of continuous work on the part of the Port Orford Chamber of Commerce with the assist ance of the News. When the coast guard officials left Port Or ford on August Io after an investigation of all possible sites, in cluding the government owned one, they went north to complete a tour of inspection of stations along the Oregon and Washington coast, Associate Engineer Andre Fourche advising the Secretary of the Port Orford Chamber that upon receipt by him of certain data he was waiting upon it would be forwarded to Port Orford so that the work of working out many details could be expedited as much as possible. Word was received from Mr. Fourche at Hammond, Oregon, that the data had not been received, but sev eral days later it finally reached here, and the work of gathering the information desired was immediately started. Mr. Fourche’s party returned to San Francisco soon after September 7, at which time all facts were turned over to him with suggestion that fur ther work be conducted directly from his office. Since that time the Chamber has been advised that that work is being done. No unnecessary delay occurred on the part of the Port Orford Cham ber of Commerce and the reference to the “ominous silence’’ was entirely unwarranted and apparently designedly used to create a false impression. In an effort to further expedite the work, Frank Seal, a member of the Port Orford Chamber of Commerce, while making a business trip to California, called on the Coast Guard officials and others, carrying letters of introduction from the Port Orford Chamber of Commerce. It is noted that in reporting the meeting of September 18 for the paper in question all reference to the purpose of the meet ing was omitted. Inasmuch as the purpose sought was not ac complished, as Messrs. Inman and Noble declined to reveal the identity of their financial backers, or any information relating thereto except what was contained in a letter from Edna O’Hara in which she stated that the European situation w'ould clarify and securities would then again be saleable. The reference to a letter from Congressman Hawley, date omitted, to Mr. Soranson refer red to a letter several years old, and has no direct bearing on the issue the taxpayers sought to solve. Citizens who had the good fortune to listen to Senator Steiwer and Congressman Hawley will recall that they thoroughly discussed the matter referred to in the letter. Newspapers have a duty to perform to the public in mat ters of this character, and that duty cannot be evaded or lightly accepted. The public depends on the newspapers for their infor mation. True, errors will occur, but errors unintentionally made and corrected are readily condoned; not so, however, with mis representation or wilful distortion. Propaganda designed to serve the selfish purpose of an individual or a group of individuals has no place in a reputable newspaper when used to throw sand in the eyes of the public either at home or abroad. The public is entitled to the facts. Taken to (¡old Beach E Married at Gold Beach II. L ew r ompa; Jo h n Slovey, 57 u to M rs.
