C ongressman Willis C. Hawley of this district
is spending the day in Port Orford renewing acquain
tances and inspecting the proposed improvement of
the natural deep water harbor as a harbor of refuge,
and the status of the new coast guard station author
ized by the recent Congress to be established on the
local harbor at a cost of $83,500.
This veteran Congressman needs no introduction
to the public as his long and valuable service to the
First District in Congress have placed him among the
foremost legislators of the nation, and with his chair
manship of the powerful Ways and Means Committee
of the House of Representatives his contact with na
tional affairs places him prominently in the public
eye and gives him a prestige that is hard to battle
against. This was demonstrated in the location of the
Soldiers Home matter at Roseburg last week. Mr.
Hawley gave his promise to Roseburg early, as Rose
burg was the initial backer of the movement, and he
consistently kept that promise through thick and thin.
This is characteristic of the man and accounts for the
high place he has won for himself and for his state in
national affairs. His return for another term assures
Oregon a continuance of a prominent role in the leg
islative affairs of the nation.
