Another fast working mining promoter—Alfred Nelson—has used the mining resources of Curry county for his self-serving purposes, according to a Myrtle Point news item appearing in this issue of the News. Claiming to be a mining engineer representing the Vandercook Mining Company of Sacramento. Calif., Nelson, it alleged, negotiated a lease on the mining property of A. E. Heubner on the South Fork of the Sixes River about three weeks ago, and, having thus “established” himself as a mining man, promptly began to cash in on the credit gained by passing many worthless checks, finally fleeing the officers of the law accompanied by one of the fair daughters of Myr tle Point. Investigation afterwards disclosed that Nel son was not in the employ of the mining company in question. Port Orford schools opened yes terday with the largest first day attendance In their history. In the high school 47 pupils were enrolled, and in the grade school 75, a total of 122. Investigation before a deal is closed, and not after the horse has been stolen, would lessen the monetary loss and the anguish and misery which usually follows in the wake of their ill-conceived schemes, as the get rich quick artist cannot stand in vestigation, while the reputable businessman has no hesitancy in laying his cards on the table face up and furnishing such references as will determine his faith, integrity, and financial ability to perform. Oregon, Inc., Broadcast The lesson to be learned from cases of this char acter is plain. When a promoter wants something you have you are entitled to a complete show down of his ability and financial standing, and, if he hesitates or refuses to submit to such an investigation, he should be passed up as unworthy of having business dealings with. Any other course leads to loss and misery. Road To Be Improved August Weather Statistics CHURCH CALENDAR Tax League Meets Port Meeting j,r.
